Anyone have more updated info on this station mentioned on the boards a few months back? Potential sign-on date, etc.

Not yet, Spring-Summer 2010 I think.

One question, please. WHY?

Why would anyone put an AM on the air at 1450 in this day and age? Who's going to listen? Folks over Milford way are largely NY and NJ natives or commuters, they're probably a little too uptown to give any thought to hitting a new hometown AM station.

Sorry, no offense and all those disclaimers, but for God's sake, people, AM is dead. To misquote Dickens; "Old AM is as dead as a door-nail."

Yes, I full well know that WILK had a great book, but let's remember that WILK is also on FM and they are doing talk. Plus, and you cannot ignore this, WILK has decades long history in this market. A new AM has squat to start. I wouldn't invest $500 in any AM start-up.

And I thank you for your time...

Since when is AM dead? There are still a few that aren't owned by the big guys that are actually making money with AM. When the Port Jervis AM station on 1490 did local news and local programming, they were doing OK. When 840 and 960 in Stroudsburg/Mt Pocono did local programming during the day, they had a good number of commercials on there. It can be done, you just have to have a Chevey attitude and not a Caddy one! Milford will do OK, sit back and watch!

Vince.....the Port Jervis FM is moving out to Stroudsburg leaving no FM there and I think the 1450 guy has a 250 watt FM translator at a high height (practically a Class A) in the vicinity. This is a "hot" area. This one works.

anyone know what the format will be? i do find the choice of call letters interesting. WQCD. maybe they'll sign on with broadcast architecture's "smooth jazz" network and try to attract those NYC commuters who used to listen to WQCD 101.9.

The thing with 1450, being a graveyarder and competing with 1490 which has a horrible signal is; it will need to be a plant that is very well set up.
While the calls WQCD leave NYC area listeners wondering if it will program smooth jazz, those calls may be temporary.
Clearly if the man has a translator available, that is the very reason for 1450 to go on the air.

And yes, a well run local AM station can do well. Plus, Milford is FULL of mom/pop businesses, which a local radio station needs to succeed.

This one can do well, if done right. The potential is there........(plus, since most of the power rules no longer apply, it could be that 1450 could get a power increase; doubt it, but we will see).

Are you serious, about the Milford station using WDRE as its call letters? Seems like every station is trying to acquire these. Anything new regarding sign-on date?

Mr. Sweeney's comment is half right. Most of the people who jump on these boards are "owner-want to be" folks and don't understand that the senior band only caters to the 65+. Young People don't listen to AM. I'm an owner of an AM Station and I know, especially one that is located just outside a metropolitan city. It's tough. Mom and Pop Businesses can't afford advertising like they once could, and "live and local" AM Radio comes with a price tag.

AM is not dead yet, but it's headed that way. Young adults 35 and under don't even know AM is even there, and could careless. Most people think they are going to set the world on fire with an AM Station, WRONG! The formats that saved AM Radio in the 80's and early 90's are moving to the FM band, like sports, talk, classic country, religion, spanish, etc. In 25 to 30 years, the commercial AM band will be just about gone, and the ham operators will take it over.

My AM plays AC during the day, but I sell block programming to pay the bills. When the block programming is not on, I enjoy the AC format. FM Translators will be scarce for many AMs to get due to congress is pushing this LPFM deal. I'm not saying I'm right, but only time will tell.

I'm curious how they are going to get two patterns from one antenna.
Or is it going to be one tower for day time and another for night? That's how it appears.
The locations are about 2000 feet apart. I don't know why that would significantly affect the
area of coverage.

The calls on this are now WMJQ, wonder if I could sell them an LED selectable call letter sign?

Not a bad idea, given the current rate of station call sign turn over.

Radio locator is often incorrect...FCC AM Query lists non-directional same coordinates. April 8, 2011 is CP expiration. They have an FM translator to go with this. If Port jervis FM (96.7) moves as it is suppose to, this is a very viable operation.
