Miller Communications In Orangeburg

Lots of blowouts at Miller Communications in Orangeburg. Two weeks ago, Todd Franklin PD and PM Drive Host was let go along with the Office Manager Deneen Wingard. A couple of months back, I heard the programming assistant was let go as well. Sales have been down and word has it that Lee Wiles the Station Manager is gonna be let go soon!! Any thoughts anyone!!??

LOL. Really, is there anything eles that needs to be said. Trust me, if Harold is letting people go, he couldn't find any other way. Unless there's a problem with those let go, you can bet that Harold will try to place them at the most and offer them there jobs back when things get better at the very least.

Miller seems like the kind of guy that would figure out a way to buy the Double O stations in Columbia. In fact, I was surprised he didn't get the 94.3 IP when it started. I don't know if he tried and was outbid?

I recall seeing in the sale docs filed with the FCC that Harold brokered either the deal for 92.1 or 94.3, so he made some money off of it. For awhile Harold's position was that he didn't want to be a small fish in a bigger pond.

I definitely agree that Harold Miller could have done a better job with those stations. Both of them have done nothing but flounder ever since they have been on the air and WWNU has never really been able to comptete with WCOS-FM. I find it interesting that even though Clear Channel has cut so many positions and WCOS is tracked half of the time, it still kills New 92.

While I understand the love shown Harold Miller for deeds past, what makes anyone think he would make a go of any radio stations anywhere these days? He HAS a cluster in Florence/Sumter, that barely registers with listeners OR advertisers. Someone please explain this to me. Glory days is one thing, but Harold's a long time removed from from producing quality radio stations as he once did. Is he making money? Sure. But from a programming standpoint, I'm not sure I understand the willingness of everyone here to believe he's just waiting to come riding in on his white horse to save SC radio.

I don't think anyone has suggested Harold is the great hope of Columbia radio. Just saying that there was all the hype and buildup of this great "deep pockets" broadcaster, Double O, coming to town. Then it falls flat on it's face. So the point is that Harold could have done just as well without all that. Also, he may not be known as a ratings success, but with all the corporate radio in this world, you can't help but root for a mom-n-pop.

Harold Miller is a good broadcaster, a good operator, and cares deeply about the business and is doing more than surviving as an independent operator in smaller markets in a bad economic downturn. That alone deserves recognition.

It definitely seems like he is making a better go than some of the corporate giants that might have better ratings, but give me his locally run company any day and i would dare say that he would program 92.1 and 94.3 better than they are being programmed and run right now.

Harold is not the great hope but it sure helps when you give a crap about what your doing and I am sorry if I offend some people but I have a hard time beliving that everyone in corprate radio cares about what is going on right now so long as they get a paycheck. Harold and I may not agree on everything but he's Harold and I am Chuck and we are to different companies with different ideas in some cases but I am sure that we agree on caring about what happens in radio right now. Double O had around a 2.0 rating in a very uncertain market, if that would have been me right now I would have been very happy because we were still showing during very rough times. We are not in a market but I know about how many people we have listening in our area and I don't complain a bit no matter what the ratings would say if we were in a market we have alot of listeners for a small radio station, sometimes ratings are over rated it's what you do that makes the differance.

You know, I respect Harold. But as someone who spent 6 months under his "Underlings" I must say he has a way of putting the most currupt people in power. It was my least favorite experiance in radio.
FYI If he would be such a savior for Columbia Radio, then why can't he beat Marion at WORG in Orangeburg?

For the record, I left to buy a 31 year old medical supply business. I own this business and it was an excellent business opportunity....otherwise, I would still be at Miller Communications.

No one said anything about WGFG moving from 105.1 to 105.3 and changing power levels from 6KW to 12KW on the 14th last Friday so I will say something here.
