Was down in Milwaukee for a few days on business and really liked several stations, WKLH, WRIT. They list WRIT as a varietyhits station but to me they really sound like an updated oldies station. The Brew almost sound more Jack-ish to me. What do you guys think?

WRIT was an oldies station that reimaged and added some 80s music. They're certainly not a 'Jack'. The processing is great, and I like their all-day 70s on Sundays. Horrible morning show, IMO.

Neither is The Brew, though they come close at times. They started out playing all 80s rock, AOR hits and hair metal. Got good ratings in their first few books before burn factor set in and the competition fought back. Now, their format doesn't seem to have a lot of direction. They still have the 80s rock, hair metal, etc., but now mix in more 70s and 90s, grunge, modern AC and power ballads. Yeah, I guess you could say they sound Jack-ish. Not a bad station, though. Kind of a throwback to the 70s when FM stations didn't really have tightly defined formats.

KLH is KLH. They've been doing the same classic rock thing for 20 years. They're good, but they need to expand the playlist a bit.

Other stations worth checking out:

WKTI (94.5)- Position themselves as an adult top 40 station (more Hot AC, no rap). I like the presentation, even if they tend to burn out songs. Jocks sound a bit tired, too. I'm glad to see there are AC stations out there that have decided to stop pounding the corpse that is Modern AC. Unfortunately, this is something rival WMYX has not done.

WLUM (102.1) - A pretty good alternative station, if that's your cup of tea. Locally-owned with live jocks 24/7. Or so it sounds.

The Hog (102.9) - Decent rock station, reimaged a couple years ago (used to be Lazer 103) due to The Brew. They were the ones that likely forced Brew to 'Jackify' their playlist. Lots of harder classic rock, with some newer stuff thrown in.

WWDV (96.9) - It's "The Drive" out of Chicago, via it's Zion/Kenosha stick. Comes in through most of Milwaukee.

Not only that, but WMYX airs Delilah at night! They picked up her show after the only AC station in town ditched the format earlier this year. As of a couple of months ago, a new AC station signed on (don't know it off hand as I live in the northern suburbs of Chicago), but WMYX continues to air Delilah. Now either way, Delilah has no business anywhere near a Hot AC station! Maybe WMYX gets decent ratings at night, but this station still has an identity problem IMO, with their playing a Modern AC mix during the day, and soft AC at night. As far as I'm concerned, as long as WMYX continues their "brokered" format, WKTI will reign supreme in the Milwaukee Hot AC race, despite the close ratings between the two stations.

You think that's bad? I just recalled that WKTI recently picked up John Tesh (ick!). Even though he's already on a soft AC station in Racine. I guess they want to suck as bad as The Mix. I swear, whenever Journal comes close to getting it right...

So it seems that Milwaukee is the dumping ground for every syndicated evening show available. KLH has Alice Cooper and WBWI has Lia. WLUM is probably the best choice at night. Live, heavy on phone-ins, lots of music without the canned calls from depressing housewives, decent jock, and on top of that, you get a full hour of good show, "Indie Soundcheck" at 11.

And the new AC station in town is WLDB, formerly WJZI. They're at 93.3 FM.

At least though WKTI inserts their own playlist into Tesh's show (as any station who picks him up does). With Delilah on WMYX, that is basically the equivalent of a format flip each night from 7PM to midnight! At least with Tesh, WKTI can retain their format during his show, which like I said, is the way Tesh's show is designed.

But I do agree with you that Milwaukee should not be a dumping ground for syndicated shows all of the time. The last time I checked, Milwaukee is still considered a major city, at least I would think they are!

Something likely not thought about, but...

How's the traffic reporting in Milwaukee, both on the CC stations and non-CC? What do they do well? Not well?
