Good news that 12 miners have been found alive tonight in W Virginia.
All the news channels are covering it. CNN is using the special coverage to showcase their new CNN Pipeline Service ($2.95/mo $25/yr) which is providing four feeds (or pipes as they call it) of different news sources on a desktop application. It somewhat resembles ABC News' service, but the application offers more features than ABC.
CNN Pipeline is still hampered by contractual limitations with their cable affiliates which prohibits the use of CNN's domestic news channels on a live stream, so they rely on CNN International for special live breaking news and a new studio and talent especially for Pipeline during the rest of the day. Whoever designed the Pipeline studio needs to get back on their ADHD meds because it's crazy busy and distracting.
The other feeds vary - many are extended coverage of press coverage that the main network isn't carrying, or reporters standing around waiting for their live shot. Often a special weather feed sits on the service with graphical weather forecasts scrolling by.
CNN Pipeline also claims to have "on demand" clips well into the thousands running all the way back to the first day CNN signed on. I haven't played much with that feature yet.
Video streaming is high quality - broadband users will get more out of the service. A two week free trial is available with credit card number, so remember to cancel before the 14th day if you don't plan on paying for the service.
What I hope they will do is provide extended coverage of their affiliates during major breaking news. It would have been nice to see a local Oklahoma City station with live coverage of the wildfires for example.
