Mini Disc Help

I've got a couple Sony MZ-R70 portable mini disc recorders. Rather that "reinventing" the wheel, I wonder if anyone has any thoughts on the following.

When using this in conjunction with a Sony ICF-2010, or GE SuperRadio, I seem to pick up a lot of RF on the radios which seems to be generated by the recorders. Moving the MD away from the radio helps, but I suspect some RF is finding it's way back to the radio via the lead that connects from headphone out on the radio, to line in on the MD. I'm thinking of putting some ferrite chokes at both ends of the cable. But has anyone else come up with a better solution?

Also, the plugs I purchased at Mouser Electronics work so-so, in that they seem to loose connection causing a loss of audio or a hum. I assumed these are standard 1/8" stereo plugs. Is there a better plug to use?

This is the inherent problem with using domestic type equipment in a pro environment.

I think you should try the RF suppression idea. Get some round toroids (donuts) and wrap the audio cable around them, through and over, through and over etc.

Just one should be enough.

Regarding the plugs, yes sadly the 1/8" stereo plugs and jacks are "de rigeur" for most domestic items. Not the greatest connector in the world and some manufacturers don't adhere to the sizing standards, so you get plugs and sockets that are not a tight fit.

You really can't beat gear that has balanced inputs and outputs on 3 pin XLR connectors. No noise, no loose connections.

If you want a solid secure connection on the MD recorders, open them up, remove the 1/8" jacks and solder some good quality Belden shielded cable to the PCB. Run it out the hole once occupied by the jack and put a 1/4" plug on the end of the cable with a mating 1/4" jack on the radio. Better than the 1/8" plugs and jacks.
