It used to be that if you tried for a job at a station the PD might tell you he liked your work but you didn't do what they do. Not that I'm for pigeonholing but some people are so badly cast that you have to wonder what goes on in programming's heads. My 4 examples:

JETHRO AND THE PHARMACIST ON COAST
Here's a great idea. Take a rock radio sidekick and a country dj and put them together at a station neither one of them would be caught dead listening to. Let's aim it at the soccer moms with some wild and wacky stuff. Brian can see how many saltines he can eat without drinking water and newschick Amy can work a hula hoop while juggling packages of cookies. It's youtube on the radio. Middle aged fratboys gone wild.Maybe HJY Lite? Did they do some research and find out the soccer moms really want radio people entertaining each other instead of the audience? Is Rick Everett channeling Chuck Barris?

JESSICA ON HOT 106
Aside from da fact that with Tessa moved on south she may be the only local dj in da building who doesn't shave her head,here's another example of Tony Bristol hiring people who live da hip hop lifestyle. When da Hardy Boys do da programming and music for a hip hop station it stands to reason they hire Nancy Drew for mid days. Another example of how people will do everything possible just to stay on da air.

ROBBY BRIDGES ON CAT COUNTRY
I'll admit he's shown some stability since his surprising move to country and considering the staff there he's more of a standout but there's nowhere else in Providence where he can be a star so it's time to either move on up to another market or go to law school. I thought being born and raised in Vermont was a prerequisite to working there anyway.


ED MCMANN ON B101
Lots of human interest stories about people on the west coast and midwest. Lots of music trivia about what kind of guitar was played during what song. In other words lots of nothing that has nothing to do with Providence. When you track classic hits,urban,ac,and top 40 stations there just aren't enough hours or breaks in the day so just do the same show on all the stations and when in doubt talk about K-Fed. Does anyone there even have a say in what this guy does or how long his breaks are?

Ed M is great to have in Providence. He knows his stuff and he doesn't sound like a DJ at the local college radio station. He is probably the last person I would complain about. Ed is very experienced and he brings a professional sound to a market where it's otherwise severly lacking. We're lucky to have him.

He talks too much.Waaaay too much.It's a midday shift.No one pays attention to the banter.It's background noise and there needs to be less of it.I don't know why CC doesn't just go jockless middays.I'm finding tracked djs talk more than live ones.

Which do you agree with since it looks like these are two opposing points of view? Obviously Ed is a pro but I think he's always in AT40 mode. This has come up before & I'm guilty of it but when his name is mentioned people get all anti-Ed because he replaced Big John & that calls to mind the time when Bina & Cruisin Bruce were let go so Ed will never win when it comes to real radio fans or most in the biz.

As far as Tad & Brian they're doing a good job but right now they're doing a routine. Brian will probably always do a routine. It's what he's good at & radio is a stage to him. He's not going to go for audience relatability any more than a stand-up comic gets close to the audience. That will be Tad's job & the audience is going to have to get to know him more because even though Brian has been upped to co-host from wisecracker in the background he'll still be the wisecracker. I'm still up in the air as to whether or not the audience wants a routine. Regardless of how the show jells I don't know if word of mouth is ever going to bring people to Coast since people get settled in their morning listening habits & I doubt that people will think "Joanie's gone. The Coast is clear." Remains to be seen.

In Providence I think Robby is where he belongs but I agree Jessica on Hot is a strange thing even though I haven't heard her there. In the business Hot is not looked at as a good urban station although I'm no judge of that & I wonder if they're constantly apologizing for the format with some of their decisions.

i still say delilah dosent belong on coast at all.... im guess shes still on because theres prolly a long term contract clear channel dont wanna buy out of any courtny young sounds awful voice tracked... its so ovious there.....

i think Ed over at 101 would get more respect if he were live.... be we all know that will never happen

i think the only problem at hjy is afternoon drive.... i still dont see the chemestry w/ charles and brangifortie... either one would be good on there own

lite rock sounds pritty good...

pro-fm...... i dont even know where to begin there.... i think all the talent there is decent.... but stale... time for a change its only been what 15 yrs lol... kerry would be good either in mornings or afternoon drive
 
I just don't know who Coast is going after. On the one hand their obvious competitor is Lite & I even heard Pretty Woman by Roy Orbison on Coast last week which to me is a direct response to Lite playing 60s music (mainly soul) but on Coast it just sounded out of whack like they stopped normal programming to play it, then went back to the usual music. On Lite the 60s stuff doesn't sound off. The Coast morning show as I mentioned before is more of a "routine" now & seems aimed more at the PRO-FM morning show as opposed to Lite's which is more casual. I just don't see that suddenly Coast's numbers are going to improve in leaps & bounds & maybe they don't expect them to.

As far as PRO-FM I think stability is what they have going for them. They're not doing bad radio but people who grew up on CHR want the same excitement from radio that they felt when they were young & aren't going to get it. If PRO-FM were to change with their listeners they'd have to change format so the problem is the listeners & not the station.

Last I heard Chris Eagan is off-air & doing production there. Courtney voicetracks from a warmer climate.
