Miss America moves to TLC in 2008

The Miss America Organization today announced a multi year agreement with TLC, its new network home, which will telecast the distinguished "Miss America Pageant" on Saturday January 26, 2008 . In addition to airing the 2008 Miss America Pageant on Jan. 26, TLC will broadcast a new reality series centered on the lives of the women vying for the crown. http://www.missamerica.org/news/press-releases.asp

Julie,
Distinguished? Generaaly, it TANKS in the ratings.

WHY do I care where Miss Nevada lives - and if she gambles every day?

TLC used to be a great network. Now I never watch it. I see they still have that show Trading Spaces. Now I watch their sister channel Discovery which has gotten real good from Mythbusters to Man vs Wild to Dirty Jobs.

This is low, even for TLC. So much for "The Learning Channel".

It didn't make sense to have Miss America on CMT last year, either.

Why not MyNetwork or The CW? ::)

Give TLC a chance. Besides, "Trading Spaces" used to be one of their top-rated shows until Paige Davis and Ty Pennington left.

I was hoping one of the Turner networks (TBS or TNT) would pick up Miss America, but they've got too much time on their hands now, especially TNT with "Saving Grace" and "The Closer". Oh, well...

What about Lifetime, Oxygen or WE? They are the ones that should be hosting The Miss America Pageant not TLC and the last channel it was on CMT. What's next? Moving the show to ESPN or Outdoor Life Network??

The pageant was negotiating with Oxygen 2 years ago. CMT was alleged to have offered themselves as a road for the show to be on CBS which fit the pageants desire to return to one of the big 3, or is it 4, networks.

Like MTV and VH1, they're only that service in name only now. None of these initial channels have any of the origins left. What a shame! No wonder I never watch any of them! :(

Some channels I think do. ESPN, sure they show movies sometimes but they are sport movies. QVC and HSN stick to their name and thats selling stuff. Disney shows family movies and shows kids love same with Nick. TNT, USA, TBS all are doing the same by showing hit shows and movies which they have been doing forever. Sure TNT and TBS share movies, but who knows why they do.

Now channels that aren't the same anymore. ABC Family, when ABC took over they went away from family part of the channel. Im guessing because of Disney they don't want to compete. TLC we know they aren't the same they are The Life Channel. That channel goes from Tattoos to Trading Spaces to little people and now to Miss America. Whats next.

As for other channels sure VH-1 has really gone down hill. They are like E Network #2. I believe VH-1 should be a Hot AC format showing music videos from that format on the radio. Sure they can have movies and shows that fit that format.

And MTV they should show more music videos sure. Maybe when The N comes MTV will move Next, Sweet 16, etc to that channel. But some shows when MTV didn't have this many like The Real World could stay. Oh and a new one for MTV I see they are showing movies. Maybe the M means Movie TV lol.

CMT isn't to bad they show country shows like Dukes, Trick my Truck, etc. Only thing they did wrong last year was to have the Miss.

Anyother channels that have lost their touch if you wanna say?

Lat night TLC was showing a movie about princess Diana. I think it was a movie made by the BBC since they own TLC. It had british actors and actresses in the movie.

That's because ESPN used to stand for the Entertainment and Sports Programming Network. They couldn't call it SPN because that name was already taken by the Satellite Program Network (Chris Berman thinks a Spanish station took the SPN name).

TLC couldn't rename themselves The Life Channel because they would run into confusion with Canada's Life Network (now Slice). And of course, we all know how The Comedy Channel and HA! would merge to become CTV: The Comedy Network, until the legal eagles at that same-named Canadian network forced them to rebrand themselves as Comedy Central. Talk about blaming Canada!!

This past weekend I thought I would lose my cookies when they were running a reality show all Sunday long on CMT (COuntry Music TV) with Vanilla Ice, Adam Baldwin, "Enforcer" from American Gladiators, and Francesco Quinn (Anthony Quinn's son) (among others) trying to be professional bullriders.

Incredible...

Don't you remember TNN, which was once The Nashville Network? It actually WAS a country music channel. Then starting in the mid-90s, they had loads of Auto Racing programs, and slowly backed away from music videos. And then it changed to The NATIONAL Network. That didn't last long, and now, it actually DID change its name. It's called Spike TV now. And I think most of it is crap.

I think they should move the Miss America Pagent to the NFL Network. This way, no one can watch it unless you have Direct TV. If a wife or girlfriend wants to watch Miss America, they will have to buy Direct TV for their husband or boyfriend.

I think the Miss America pageant is destined to fold in a few years. I don't think Miss USA or Miss Universe will last much longer either.
Beauty pageants are a dying form of entertainment. It used to be interesting to see all these beautiful women compete with some kind of talent. The bathing suit contest used to be one of the only mildly titilating things on TV all year. Now, not so much.

We see hot bods on prime time all the time. Aside from the contestants stripping nude, there's just not much that could grab your attention nowadays in most beauty contest.

The talent portion of the show has also lost it's appeal since we see women competing in talent contests all over the place on reality TV shows. There's just nothing special about Miss America anymore.

To give you a better example of how far the show has fallen, the Miss Texas Pageant used to be syndicated all over the state. It would pre-empt network programming in many markets and get good ratings. This year, it was a webcast only and there was no media coverage of any kind. I saw a notice in the paper about who won, but I seriously think it was written from a press release sent out by the pageant. People just don't care anymore.

I also think the notion of women competing for scholarship money this way has lost it's appeal. It's a bit unseemly and, since most women go to college now, it's not that big a deal anymore. That wasn't the case decades ago.

Times change and there's really nothing the beauty pageant can do to change with it and stay relevant or interesting to the average viewer.

I don't know if you knew this, but the Miss Teen USA pageant just aired on NBC last Friday night. I am actually a bit of a fan of beauty pageants myself. I've even seen one live. For years and years, they had a local one in my hometown. They did it every year up until about 1996 or so, and then they brought it back in 2001. Starting in 2001, they did it solid for 3 years, but have not done one since 2003. It really is a shame, but, not much you can do about it.
