With all the Top 40's out there, a lot are the same. BUT... The difference between them are the Gold's. That's where a PD/MD will make a difference. If any of you have actually listened to Hit 106, you know that Matt Knight's signature is very original. A lot of the Golds heard on Hit 106 aren't heard anywhere else in the market(s). They make the station fun to listen to. For an everyday listener, they add a great "what's coming on next" situation. Kudos to Matt Knight and Hit 106 for taking the chance to surprise their listeners.
We're talking about an extremely minute part of the big picture. Maybe 5-10% of the overall playlist consists of these kinds of songs. But if you listen for a half an hour to a number of stations, as I did recently, you don't notice any difference at all. The differences between all the Top 40 stations are extremely subtle, and only the most devoted listeners of each one could probably explain what makes each one unique.
All I know is that when I turned on Hit 106, I heard Britney Spears, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Soulja Boy Tell Em, Jesse McCartney, and all of the same old songs I could hear anywhere else ... and considering that this used to be the place where we could hear bands that no other station on the dial plays, such as Radiohead, Beck, Garbage, Kaiser Chiefs, Shiny Toy Guns, Bloc Party, Arcade Fire, NJ acts like Dramarama and The Gaslight Anthem, etc., it's all the more disappointing.
It still doesn't make sense why we can have all of these Top 40 stations (wherever you are in Monmouth/Ocean, you can fill all your presets with stations playing the same exact music), and not even one modern rock station. Does the male listener not matter? We're not all into Led Zeppelin and AC/DC, so whoever is responsible for this bogus research that says there's no need for an alternative station in this area screwed up their data.
