Missing Format in New York City Radio

It just seems strange that an AM public radio station is successful, and I would have thought the music format might work there.

Come on...it's 2019. Music on AM is a non starter.

As for alternative, as has been stated here numerous times, what you call "safe" is what sells. And, for whatever it's worth, the format isn't all that healthy right now...playing "deeper" or harder rock will make it worse.
