Missing Real Radio Wars

Just looking at the ratings/trends and list of stations in Fluffiya and pondering: where have the legendary Radio Wars gone? It was great fun to see/hear WYSP/WMMR go at it. Not now. "The Point" and the format-du-jour-that-is-BEN-today had some promising moments. Now, BEN's doing well as a JACK-lite/Point's in trouble in kish-kish-boom land as Wired. B101 and SUNNY should be a real back-and-fourth battle. The Bee wins without doing much of anything because SUNNY is CLOUDY. KYW-AM has zero reason to actually sound more professional because...they have zero competition. OLDIES gets a free pass on playing such a h-u-g-e library in terms of years they encompass that they would be laughed out of town in any other town for calling themselves an OLDIES outlet. The only Classical station in town isn't even a FULL-time Classical station but must share that signal with Jazz/Blues for half the day. I could go on, but, why bother? Somebody else can pick up the baton here... :p

It would take a major political upheaval to privatize liquor stores, get beer in supermarkets, overhaul the city tax code and get the toll booths off the Turnpike. But terrestrial radio can easily be ignored - and is being ignored - in favor of satellite radio. No wonder Arbitron only publishes shares - not cume. Too bad if the word got out how many people aren't listening. We are headed toward radio with only formats targeting geezers (who won't pay for radio), the "economically disadvantaged" (who can't pay for radio) and the suckers (who respond to infomercials).

Hopefull the PPM's will put a candle under the arses of the brain trust.Actual listener numbers ::) could explode this mess.

satlite radio and internet radio is going to soon be kicking some terrestrial ass.

Satellite, yes. Internet, no. The pie is sliced too thin in that regard, and you still can't listen to it in your car, wifi or not.Maybe in 5-10 years down the road, broadband radio may have a shot, but not right now.

Back To The Original Idea...

Let's assume for a moment that the biggest dogfight in Philly could/should be the SUNNY vs The Bee one. Similar format, similar music and the possibility that SUNNY could make a real contest outta this by (snide remark alert) actually TRYing to win.

To make SUNNY more competitive:

a) Make the announcing more fore-ground.
b) Hire a better group of jocks.
c) Put some cojones into the promotions.
d) ADVERTISE more: TV, print and internet.
e) Work on that playlist; punch it up some.

Otherwise, what a waste of a frequency; Jerry Lee wins by default. :-\

Sunny could send an intern over to the Wawa to buy a dozen boxes of Cracker Jack. Dump out the contents into a big bowl for the staff.Save the prizes.Assign values to each prize ranging from $5,000 to $50,000.00.Hold some contests.Give away the prizes.Better yet, admit newer tehcnologies have suplanted FM for non-Urban/Hispanic music formats. Flip Sunny to talk. Take Rush and Beck back from PHT and improve their demos.

Ha ha ha...snap your fingers, it's THAT easy right? Just "take" 'em. We'll keep those two clowns on our AM, thank you.
