IF memory serves, KPRC was the first out there....KHOU was down at Galveston originally...moved to MC later and it may have been when the DeWalt 1400ft tower was built in the early 60s. ABC 13 was on their own tower at the far east end (1000ft)....in the 70s, the 4 TV stations were there and the FMs had not moved there yet...2, 11 and 39 were on Dewalt and 13 was still on their ~1000ft.

in the 80s, Sr Road #1 was built for the 9 FMs and KTXH...then it fell as the top half of the FM master antenna was being raised....Sr Road #2 was built a year later...and then the exodus of the FMs from Shell Plaza to Sr Rd began...
and then came the other 2000ft towers for the TV folks.

I remember when I was a kid (in the 70s) I would get up really early Saturday morning just to see channel 13 sign on. The voice over was former weatherman Charlie Harrison (whatever happened to him) he would mention their "transmitter facilities are located near Almeda, Texas". I think I still have it on cassette somewhere. Strangely I still remember alot of how that sign on went.... I carry LOTS of useless info.

> CW got it pretty much as it was, so long ago. The original 1549'"candalabra" tower ON SENIOR ROAD was the main stick for 2,11,& 39. 13 had their own 850' stick (and still do NorthEast of the old 1549'candalabra). As for FM's, the Senior Road project was delayed by the unfortunate collapse of the 1st tower, but a year later the very first signal on the air from the serial number 002 CBR antenna was KIKK. KYND,KLEF,KSRR,KODA,KILT KLOL and KRBE would go on soon after that.

A little known fact about the SRTG stick is that the original location where it was going to be erected, was where the "twin" towers now stand.

As for the location of all the "tall" towers in Mo City: The FAA was instrumental in that decision, being able to have all the "tall" obstructions for both HOU and IAH in one location made it easier to plan approach and departure routes for the MAJOR airports.

One other thing about the SRTG tower that has to do with the collapse, the original tower pedestal base is still in the same place, and not moved over as stated by CW in an earlier discussion post.

Harrison was ch.13's main voiceover guy well into the 80s "13 in Houston, KTRK-TV". Not sure what happened to him.

I thought I said the original base is still there...but the current SR Tower is west of the original by 20-40 ft....I almost ran into the original tower base once out there :)

Yeah, you're right about the original base, but it wasn't damaged by the collapse, because the last 20' section just popped off of the pin on the base and fell over channel 20's building. So when the tower started back up the base was fine to reuse.
I can't wait to see the demolition of the old 1549' which is supposed to happen before too long.
