Missouri City tower farm

Just a random thought/ observation. I've noticed more and more residential and commercial development getting closer and closer to the towers at the Missouri city tower farm. I wonder if any thought has been given to a consolidation of transmit facilities to master antenna to cash in on the suburban land grab. You could consolidate to an FM tower (ie: Sr Road) a UHF/VHF tower for TV and maybe a third tower for FM/TV axillary antenna . 20 years ago this idea may have been crazy, but given the struggle of many media companies, Id say they need to find ways to get more revenue, and divesting real estate is always a good bet.

Keep in mind that many, if not most of the Missouri City sticks, are NOT owned by broadcast companies, but rather separate tower facility operators. The broadcasters lease the space. The tower owners aren’t going anywhere, at least as long as long as the current technical models for FM/TV transmission stay in place.

Master antennas are technically complicated and very expensive to construct. The new facilities are really not needed.

You also need to consider how much longer the current systems for FM and TV transmission will remain viable. We could have a future where everything is distributed over the Internet, which is technically a much different infrastructure. You would have to make a decision in whether any new construction based on current technology would have a long enough service life before becoming obsolete, to justify the cost.

On top of all that, I don’t sense any desire of developers to acquire the existing tower land in MC, unlike AM sites, which are smaller and often in areas that are favorable for redevelopment.
