Mistaken Identity

Law enforcement officials are asking the commission for information on an individual who reported an unlicensed station operating north of Boston.

The person in question who wrote a book called, “the Abominable Firebug” allegedly threatened to burn down the operator’s house; but wait there’s more.

He posted the operator’s name and personal information on an internet site. but wait there is even more.

Apparently the name and information on the website belongs to the operator’s dad. If this is not bad enough, the operator’s father is an elderly disabled man that is visually impaired. “Can you spell liable?” and it gets even better.

The father only found out about this man when he sent him a letter that his wife read to him. To the unlicensed operator’s dad.

1.) Do everything you can to put this man in jail where he belongs.

2.) Sue him for everything he has “which is probably not too much”.

3.) Call Scott Brown’s office in April and have him get you a license “believe me he can”.

4.) Write a book

I have been told to stop calling this operator " unlicensed or pirate " and now an FCC lawyer says he is not breaking the law ( I don't know how ) but I do Apologize to you sir.

I do agree on one thing. This guy does deserve a license. He has done a lot for the community and he really works hard on this station. He makes it sound great and really professional. It would make a great LPFM station.

Yup on the Canadian kid, who seems to have a real attitude problem (and gets lots of $ from his Dad).

>>It’s a low-power station and he’s a kid, so it’s no big deal, right? Wrong…The big deal is that commercial broadcast stations have their frequencies allocated in a way the ensures they don’t conflict with other stations in the area and any other users of the RF spectrum. 91.9 MHz is only 400 kHz away from CBC Radio 1 (91.5 MHz), so he could in fact be causing some local interference.

(also could be interfering with planes.)

That kid is a spoiled brat. I tried listening to his station online and I ended up turning it off after a few minutes. When I tuned in he was swearing and flipping out at his parents and calling them stupid. He was also making threatening calls to Industry Canada. He also called Canadians stupid at one point. That my friends is a person who DOES NOT deserve a license.

This interfering with planes is getting very old. Why is it that 87.9 is interfering with planes and all of the super high powered pirates in Boston won't? No one complains about them on any of these lists. The focus is on this one person. If I didn't know better I would say it has racial overtones. The same way people are afraid to speak out against radical muslims.

Who says they're not?

There's a reason why the FCC requires licensed stations to use Type-accepted gear for their transmitters: you can be assured that (assuming it's working properly) it's not putting out harmonics. Those harmonics, even for NCE band stations, can wreak all kinds of havoc in frequency bands both much and not-so-much higher than the FM band. A 2nd-order harmonic alone probably isn't a problem (even at 87.9, the 2nd-order is 175.8MHz...not in the airport band) but harmonics can also cause intermod with other frequencies, and that's when you can get interference in odd places on the dial...including on the airport tower frequencies that are right above the FM band (usually around 120-130MHz...remember that the FM band ends at 108MHz).

Pirate radio stations, of course, rarely spend the money to get Type-accepted gear. Instead they usually rely on cheap-ass kit radio like Ramsey gear, and God-only-knows if that thing might be spewing out harmonics or not. And that might change from day to day (or even hour by hour, depending on how poor the components and/or assembly are).

Great example: while back in Radio World there was a story about a station experiencing severe STL interference but only within certain time ranges, and it was frequent but not quite "regular". To make a long story short, they eventually tracked it down to a guy who was using an (illegal) cellphone jammer while commuting to and from work. Said he felt safer driving knowing that nobody around him could be yakking away on a phone. While I sympathize, this idiot's jammer was also spewing out interference on a multitude of frequencies well outside of the licensed cellphone bands....including on the freq's of the station's STL. Oops. Guy never even suspected that his cellphone jammer might do something like that.

I think this guy is unwittingly making things even more hazardous for himself and those around him. Anyone who wants to use a cell phone while they're driving isn't going to just put it away if it's not working properly. Not realizing that it's being jammed, they're going to start pushing different buttons, redialing, and trying different things to try to make it work, WHILE THEY'RE DRIVING, and paying even more attention to the phone (and less to the road) than they would be if they were just talking normally.

If they were the FCC would be right on it. The shut down cable systems that interfere with aircraft telemetry. Again you are focusing on one station that is not minority owned. I am quite familiar with FCC R&R I am a retired Network TV engineer and have ALL of the FCC licenses.

Uhm, this pirate station claims on their web site to be a "low powered FM"-then in the very next sentance that they: "can be heard from the coast of New Hampshire, all the way to Boston, Massachusetts". Also, some of the statements pisted here could be considered slanderous. I might also note that on THEIR website they have Mr. Johnson's full name, address, phone number and pictures of both him and his house.

http://www.xrqk.com/RADIOBRANDYNET/879FM.html

This is a very dangerous thing to do-and the people involved could well be charged with a crime should anything happen to Mr. Jonhson.

The bottom line is this: These people are pirate broadcasters-running FAR MORE power then part 15 allows! If they want to do this, fine-but Mr. Johnson has the right to complain to the FCC about their illegal operation. The only thing I am judging them on is their behavior towards Mr. Johnson. If this truly speaks to their character-then they deserve what they get-and NONE of us should show them a single drop of sympathy!
