Mister Rogers Swings! (advice sought)

Hello Soft AC Radio Experts...

I hope it's OK to post something like this here...It seemed like a good place to come for advice.

I've recorded a traditional pop / standards album of the Fred "Mister" Rogers Songbook called Mister Rogers Swings! Clips can be heard at www.HollyYarbrough.com. It features Boots Randolph in one of his last performances, as well as Stuart Duncan, Richard Smith and the Lori Mechem Trio.

My somewhat vague question for you folks is how to go about getting it heard. I would appreciate any and all advice about getting some airplay, especially on streaming stations. I'd be glad to forward promotional copies for your consideration. Just e-mail me at [email protected].

Warmest personal regards, and thanks for listening,

Holly Yarbrough

p.s. Here's the text of a release about the album:

On Mister Rogers Swings Nashville Jazz Cats Pay Grown Up Tribute to Fred Rogers Musical Legacy.

New album features Boots Randolph in one of his last sessions, Stuart Duncan, Richard Smith and the Lori Mechem Trio backing vocalist Holly Yarbrough in her solo debut.

Yarbrough is the daughter of sixties folk singing tenor Glenn Yarbrough who rose to fame with the Limeliters and continued to success as a solo artist on RCA records.

Mister Rogers Swings includes sixteen selections from the Fred Rogers Songbook with a grown-up jazz sound. Yarbrough's fresh, sly takes on Rogers classics like "You've Got to Do It" and "I Like to Be Told" are aimed squarely at adult audiences. Yarbrough produced the album on her own indie label, Vintage Discs. "We did it on a wing, a prayer, and a home equity line of credit" she says.

"It's been a real labor of love for us all. We wanted more people to really get the artistry of Fred Rogers' songwriting. When you hear these songs out of their usual context, I think they fit right up there in the Great American Songbook." Though the savvy interpretation might make Mister Rogers raise an eyebrow, the heart of the record stays true to his kind nature. Yarbrough finished the record while working for Alive Hospice, where she is still employed.

"I'm not a glamorous, spotlight oriented person, and I never expected I'd be making my own album. But I had this talent I wasn't using...and after Mister Rogers died, his words kept coming back to me. He said: "...each one of us has something that no one else has or will ever have – something inside that is unique to all time. It's our job to encourage each other to discover that uniqueness and to provide ways of developing that expression."

Mister Rogers Swings is available at online retailers and distributed nationally through Infinity Entertainment Group. For more information: www.HollyYarbrough.com or www.VintageDiscs.com

Hi, Holly. (It's nice to get an artist in the format posting here and if we'd known you were coming, we would have straighten the place a little!)

I read about this a couple of weeks ago and I'm (still) waiting for my copy from Kate Smith in Chicago - it seems my request got lost in a spam filter the other day - but I was told that she was getting a copy out ASAP. The project sounds very interesting and I can't wait to give it a listen.

Holly tells me that she is sending a copy to us, so it is very likely that listeners to www.kzqx.com , both on the net and over the air, will be hearing it soon.

It's nice to have something new to add.

Hey CJ if you're Big Sticks Productions in Island Park New York your copy went out this morning (So VERY sorry for the delay - your request got lost in Kate's e-mail, then in mine).

Chuck, yours went out at the same time. I checked out both of your streaming stations and I am happy to report I have two new favorites. Awesome sites - terrific music. I'd be honored to be included.

If you guys need anything else, more copies, fawning praise, you can reach me at [email protected]. I'm really excited to hear your thoughts about the album and as always, any advice is warmly appreciated.

Thanks for making me feel so welcome on the boards!

Holly Yarbrough

p.s. Any ideas on how to contact the programmers for AOL / CBS Radio's streams?

Our copy arrived in today's mail. It is really good, and sure to bring a smile to your face. "Won't You Be My Neighbor" starts playing tomorrow. Thanks!

Chuck, I was wondering if you could recommend the best tracks. I saw the CD is available on amazon but it's 20 bucks. I'd rather download a couple songs for now, then maybe get the whole CD later.

Holly,
WOW - I REEALLY love your dad's music.

Wally Phillips on WGN, Chicago used to play "San Francisco Bay Blues" and "The Honey Wind Blows" very often, and I became a fan.

I use BOTH of those songs on the closed circuit tv station that I run at a nursing home in Muskegon, Michigan.

Success and Best Wishes to you!!

My personal favorites are "Won't You be My Neighbor," and "It's a Good Feeling." They have become more-or-less permanent additions to our playlist. That said, the entire album is very well done. Some songs are more "toe tappers" than others.

Soon we hope to be launching a second station that will be Classical and Jazz. I'm sure that several cuts will appear on the jazz portion.

Thanks. Just downloaded both of those... very jazzy! Too bad the smooth jazz format (what's left of it) evolved into Urban AC. The Holly Yarbrough CD epitomizes what the format should have become.

Interesting. Temple University's WRTI is also classical (day) and jazz (night): http://www.wrti.org/

I just ordered Glenn Yarbrough's Christmas CD.

Wow. A real artist who has actually been recorded. Welcome.

We have some celebrities of sorts in Yahoo groups devoted to beautiful music. DJs who are programming national formats such as XM Escape.

Just a correction to the first post: this may be called the soft AC board but for reasons I will get into in a subsequent post today, that is an error. Soft AC has nothing to do with the music we discuss here other than the fact that most radio programmers feel the need to include songs from this genre in a standards or easy listening radio format. I passed this information along to those in charge of the site because some people think the name "soft AC" means this is the board for Delilah radio stations. It is not.

I'm curious how our new celebrity poster has two posts but her post count is one.
