Mix 105.1 "Friday Night 90s" Is Now "Friday Night Mix Tape"

On my way from doing my own radio show, I happened to tune into Mix 105.1 tonight while scanning the dial, & found a very subtle to the average listener. When I heard a different sounding sweeper about putting songs into a mix tape into a 2000's Ciara song, I was caught for a surprise. "Friday Night 90's" is no more. It is now "Friday Night Mix Tape". Their very generic Audacy website doesn't show the change, so I think they just started it tonight.

Just thought I'd like to share this with you immediately while the show is going on, so you can listen to the change for yourself. I am much more a fan of 90's music than 2000's, so I was a bit disappointed in this change. (Xennial here.)

The good news is that there is more variety, but the bad news is that it seems like the demand for 90's music is beginning to be over. Meanwhile, I have already skewed my own playlist on my own show to include Mo early 90's surprises.

What do you think of this change?
 
I noticed it last week (Friday 11/7) and wasn't overly impressed. Lots of standard Hot AC 2000s gold tracks you can hear during the week mixed in with the 90s. But I suppose research was showing it was too much 90s, especially given how many of those songs are now finding their way down the hall and up the dial to 105.9
 
I had meant to write about this a few weeks ago when I first heard it.
So now they're playing 20 years of well tested hits instead of 10.
Glad they're keeping the 90's for now.
But they're progressing.
Friday night 90's debuted a little over 10 years ago, preceded by Friday night 80's, preceded by the all-request party.
And once upon a time on Saturdays, it was 70's Saturday night.
Why do I remember this? :)
 
The change makes sense to me. If you're playing only '90s songs in 2025, you're primarily reaching listeners' who were in their 20s or 30s when those songs were current. Those listeners are now in their 50s and 60s and advertisers are no longer willing to put much money into selling to them.
 
So you're updating the music by 10 years but you're dating the imaging by reverting back 10 with the term "Mix Tape". I get it... the station is called "Mix", but if you're playing songs post 2K, none ever appeared on "tape".
 
I think mix tapes on digital/streaming media are referred to as personal playlists by people who use them. But, again, what kind of name for a radio station is Personal Playlist 105.1?
