MIX 106.5 Stunting

Supposedly it's counting down to a new year and a new station.....playing all genres including Polka!

As reported by the other site.

Another possibility is urban AC like CC is doing in Detroit (on 106.7). They've had some success with that (San Francisco, Philidelphia) and it's about time someone went after some of Radio One's audience.

Either Gen-X, a simulcast of WTAM, or a sports/talk format to wipe WKNR off the map.

If it's Gen-X, that would free WMJI to add more 80s tracks, as most classic hits stations have been apt to do recently. If WMVX still existed, there would be far too much format overlap.

WTAM's sports department could easily be repurposed for a sports/talker, plus CC has all of the important sports contracts locked up. Plus they could steal the Fox Sports Radio affiliation from WKNR/WWGK in a heartbeat.

And of course, if WTAM went on FM, it would help expose the N/T format to younger demos that are unaware the AM band exists.

Heck, maybe it's adult top 40/Hot AC as "Fresh 106.5" to combat WQAL... (Does CBS own the rights to the "Fresh" name in Ohio?)

Looking at November's PPM Mix had a 4.4 rating, slighter better than WQAL'S 4.1 rating so it doesn't seem as if there was a need to blow up the station. That is unless their not billing well.If WMVX leans any more current based they would cut into WAKS. My early guess is that MIX will go for the Gen X format.

If CC goes with a Sports-Talk format, I think it could work and overtake WKNR. They could easily take Fox Sports Radio from 1540. I can see a lineup like this:
Mon-Fri:
6-9am Zack and Jack (from Fox Sports Radio)
9-12pm Dan Patrick (from Fox Sports Radio)
12-3pm Les and Bud (they would leave DSN in a heartbeat)
3-7pm Triv (simulcast from WTAM)
7-8pm Weeknight Sportsline
8-overnight FOX Sports Radio Programming

They could make this station the new Browns flagship next season and simulcast Indians and Cavs games from WTAM.

I agree. They could have success right away if they pick up the Steve Harvey Morning Show. Its amazing how Radio One has a monopoly on the African-American listeners in Cleveland.

Probably Gen-X

Agreed. Clear Channel has launched several of these over the past year including one in St. Louis just a few days ago.

In fact, the St. Louis flip cost WMMS/100.7 afternoon host Alan Cox his side gig, voice-tracking the midday slot on that station's previous AAA format (which was very different in style and approach from his WMMS program.)

There had been some speculation that Clear Channel Cleveland hot AC mainstay WMVX/106.5 “Mix 106.5″ would change formats after the “Mixmas” Christmas music ended.

There was never mentioned at the North East Ohio Media Watch, I mean the Ohio Media Watch, of the impending format change over at Mix 106.5. As a loyal OMW reader, I'm somewhat disappointed with this development.
CC Cleveland must have done an excellent job of keeping this under warps or the OMW was on vacation. After all, OMW is the expert on N.E. Ohio
radio.

My guess at this time is a music format. Don't see any Talk and/or Spots format. Also, put me on the Gen-X bandwagon for now.

Pretty wide variety of music for a station that is stunting. Don't remember hearing such a wide variety of music before on a station that is stunting. Long gone are days when station were using time clocks to count down to a format change. This stunting has my attention. Normally, don't care much for what is going on in Cleveland radio. Is this change a exciting time in Cleveland radio?

Hey, give us* a break. ::)

I know there was serious speculation about 106.5 flipping format when they went to "Mixmas" in early November. Especially Gen-X ("Fresh" didn't enter the equation until the WNIC/Detroit flip on Monday). The fact that Daune, Tony Matteo and Jay were still around during Mixmas led me to poo-poo any idea of a format change.

Two things show that this was a total surprise:
1) Local spot breaks during the Browns broadcast on WMMS and WTAM this past Sunday contained promos for "Cleveland Best Mix: Mix 106.5" featuring the HAC format.
2) The "Mixmas" format reverted to Mix 106.5 on midnight Monday.

I guarantee you, NO ONE saw this coming.
