Mix 106

I just can't figure out why this station doesn't get better ratings than it does. They have a better variety of music than any other station and it seems like they would have attracted at least a few of the old Magic listeners.

Where did the Magic listeners go...Lite, K, or maybe The Ride?

I think Mix 106's biggest problem is their signal, or lack thereof.

I'm sure some of Magic's listeners went to Lite 102.9 and K104.7; although looking at the latest ratings I think a lot of Magic's listeners have gone country given that 96-9 The Kat and 103.7 WSOC have jumped into the number one and two slots.
______________

Another thought would be those closer to the Triad (like here in Cabarrus, Rowan, and maybe Stanly Counties), they might have went to WMQX Oldies 93. It wasn't until 96.1 flipped that we saw WMQX even showing a blip on the radar of the ratings. It also helps that former Magic DJ Boomer is now doing middays there.
______________

I wondered about that. I used to work in Monroe and live on the east side of Charlotte and they have a good signal in those areas. However driving to the Huntersville area I have noticed there is another station that tries to come in over the top of Mix at times. I thought it might have been atmospheric conditions since it happened early in the morning which is sometimes when we hear FM skip.

I head Mix play "1900 Yesterday" by Liz Damen's Orient Express a forgotten oldie from 1971. The rest of the "Timeless Classics" were good as well.

When you get into Northern Mecklenburg County Mix 106.1 is effected by Country 106.1 WMMY in Jefferson, NC.

When I travel to Charlotte I almost always listen to 95.7 the Ride or Mix 106.1. Probably Mix 106.1 more.....Do they have ANY live DJs or is it all satellite/automated ???

I also listen to Mix 106 when visiting Charlotte. I've heard live talk shows on Saturdays at Mix. ABC's Stardust is excellent. I like to listen to Mix 106 at South 21 Drive-in on Independence. If you haven't done that, try it! It's kind of funny that country stations block both Mix 106 and WIST. Mix 106 has problems with WMMY in Jefferson and WIST has problems with Blue Ridge Country 98.1 in Galax. I like to watch the sunset over downtown Winston-Salem from one of the parking decks while listening to WIST. Both are almost exactly the same, due to the satellite format. I wish 105.1 WHEL (in Georgia) would filp to ABC's Stardust.
______________

They have a local morning show, hosted by Ken Conrad...probably known more for his voice than his name. Ken was THE staff announcer voice for TV-36 During both the ownership of Ted Turner and Westinghouse.

They are also live on Saturday mornings with a talk show called Southern Lawns and Gardens, hosted by Ted Caudill, who worked for the county Ag Extension office for years and was a regular with Henry Boggan back on WBT.

On Sunday, they have two live shows...the "Big Band Sunday Afternoon" with Bob and Mary, of whom I know nothing other than the names, and "Sunday Night at the Beach" with Randy Rowland, recently imported from the defunct Magic 96.

"1900 Yesterday" was one of my favorite songs when I worked at an easy listening station many years ago. I am in awe of the fact that Mix even knows about that song. Go Mix!

I'll have to be sure to listen tomorrow morning. Ken wasn't on last week they were on the bird so I'm not sure he's still there. Hopefully he was just on vacation.

Ken did mornings with Catherine Lane at Lite 102.9 while I was there. I found him to be a great guy to work with. A good friend of mine used to be an engineer at WPCQ it was a kick to find out we both knew Ken.

Satellite or not, WIST is a great little station. The MOR music is relaxing, and at times, laugh-out-loud hilarious.

Sure wish Mix and WIST would play more of the MOR music and not as much of the stuff that all the other stations play. Yes I realize that they have to try to bring the demographics down.

In the '70's I worked for a MOR station early in my career. We used to joke that we didn't worry about our listeners changing stations we worried about them dying.

I found "1900 Yesterday" by Liz Damem's Orient Express on a rare Dick Bartley compilation CD used at Amazon. It's out of print and I got the last copy listed at a decent price (now the places that have it want $69...yeh sure). The CD has some other rare tunes on it too. Anyone remember "My Angel Baby" by Toby Beau? Another song I haven't heard in ages!

MOR Mike
