MIX 1079 - Columbus' Second CHR?

Overnight, Mix added CHR tunes from B.o.B., Usher, Ke$ha, Lady Gaga, Nelly, and more. Are they closing in on WNCI? It will be interesting to see what currents they add this week that reflect the CHR format. Does anybody else use Mix as a WNCI alternative? Do you know of anyone who does? Personally, they remind me of an old school WNCI that wouldn't play hip-hop. Kudos to TJ Holland for making these changes. I am a fan.

Is that really anything that they weren't playing all along ?

That is what I said a few months ago on this board although I can't find my comments. It looks like MIX 1079 wants to be an alternative for WNCI listeners who don't want to listen to all the Hip Hop that WNCI plays. Tuned into the morning show on 1079 yesterday morning and there is no doubt in my mind that this is what they are doing.
I heard what sounded like a rhythm track on 1079 yesterday morning so that cinched the format for me.

That said, when, if ever will they re-brand 1079? Do any other CHR stations call themselves 'Mix'?

Yes, The new PD is doing a great job because this is not an easy task trying to be an alternative
to monster signal WNCI.

Isnt that what a HOT AC is supposed to be? In fact the stations on description of its self "Music on Mix 107.9 combines today’s hottest hits – from artists like Lady Gaga, Pink, Nickelback, Taylor Swift, Katy Perry and Daughtry – with ‘90s, and 00s pop favorites from Goo Goo Dolls, Matchbox Twenty, No Doubt, and Maroon 5. It is a contemporary mix of music, without rap or hard rock." backs it up as well. That's what they have been all along.

Running a rhythm track under a break is very common in the format. yes i think that they want to be an alternative to WNCI but thats what they always have been. do i think that makes them central ohio's new CHR no way

Personally, I wouldn't say they are a CHR station now but what dose lovejamminoldies think?
Certainty, they would never directly compete against WNCI.

Maybe 1079 is a hybrid Hot AC/CHR?

I would label them an "Adult CHR" personally... Can't say they are not to far off from WNCI in the past.. As we know NCI has in the past been very conservative on what they play... only in recent years have they added rhythm based tracks.

While Columbus does have a "hole" for Hot AC .. I would not mind "Mix" leaning CHR.

I am not labeling them a CHR just yet, but the hotter they seem to be getting, they could easily be a CHR (Hot AC-leaner) by the end of Spring. Some songs they are playing now they should have been playing, but I think they were trying to be a Hot AC station for awhile, while now they are Adult CHR. The description on their site doesn't really apply anymore considering their core artists and playlist revolves around today, and not yesterday. Plus, last time I checked Flo Rida and B.o.B. classify as "rap" even though they are huge CHR artists. I don't think they'd ever get rid of the Mix moniker and change their positioner, but I do think they will start to focus on CHR hits more. We'll see what TJ and Joe add this week! There's always something new added to the playlist everyday it looks like.

I checked them out today and I'm still not impressed. If they're trying to be like the old WNCI then that's the WNCI most of us hated. So unless the go full blown CHR and really try to be a thorn in NCI's side then I see no reason to listen.

The NCI from the 90's is what I was referring to. Not heavy on the hip-hop, but big on the pop and rock records. I can't expect Mix to be a CHR when they're still selling themselves as Columbus' only Hot AC station. However, if they did make the switch to CHR, I would expect them to be a lot hotter than NCI. They've always been too conservative for my liking, only playing the real hip-hop songs at night. I personally think Mix sounds great.

I know it won't happen. It would be interesting to seem them go up against Power. However, they would be to close together and it would only be a mess and to much confusion.

Saga is not known to do many hip-hop formats. I like what they're doing with Mix, but they really need to get the word out if they want the ratings up. Because Mix is so far down the dial and they did little to no promotion when they launched, a lot of people forget they even exist.

There are "Mix" stations doing CHR, most notably Mix 93.3 in Kansas City. I dont live in Columbus Im, in Cincinnati but looks like T.J.Holland who is a great guy and former longtime PD at Warm 98 here is following in the shoesteps of Q102 here a Hot AC with heavy CHR lean or 101.9 The Mix in Chicago(Both Highly rated stations). Both Q and The Mix are owned by Hubbard. Mix 107.9's biggest obsticle is there signal, not so much the format.

I'd dump the syndicated evenings too, but you know how Saga loves Billy Bush! At least they have their own music during the show now rather than the canned feed. If it was Billy Bush's people programming the music, I wouldn't listen at night. There are plenty of Mix stations that are CHR, but I don't think Saga will turn Mix into a full-blown CHR. Just an Adult CHR.
