MIX/90s Weekend

Something that is bugging me, is that WBMX is doing this 90s weekend, which actually is a great idea, I love that part....but what's annoying is that they are playing maybe 4 or 5 songs an hour that fit the category....if it's supposed to be this big weekend thing, shouldn't every song be 90s?

If every song were from the 90's:

1) it would COMPLETELY turn off those who didn't enjoy the music of the 90's, where at least here they get a MIX (get it?!)

2) The 90's weren't good enough for an entire weekend of songs, non-stop. You'd be hearing some pretty terrible stuff.

I double that. As much as I like 90s music. I double that.
They cpuld however play some, maybe some one hit wonders from the 90s. Other than that, I double this

There were some good songs in the '90s, but that was the decade in which the charts turned to sludge, and you had songs routinely staying at No. 1 for 8, 9, 10 weeks. Songs would remain in regular rotation for half a year and recurrent for a year after that. Same thing is still true today, especially on AC stations.

I would love if they did just do a 90s playlist, that's a good couple hundred songs to choose from over the decade where there would've be mega repetition, and there would be a good MIX...and yes, I get the MIX idea...that's for there regular format...which this weekend is supposedly suspended for the extreme 90s...get it?

A couple hundred songs isn't going to cut it. Let's say you're only worried about 6AM-Midnight, with a weekend spot load you're looking at 10-12 songs an hour. Let's be conservative and say 10 an hour, 18 hours, that's 180 songs. You've got a three day weekend. That's a lot of repetition.

Every song would be some SERIOUS overkill. Our hot ac is doing an independence day weekend party. Party tracks from the last 15-20 years. Some of these skew outside of format (Nelly's Hot In Here, Biggie's Hypnotize), but they are all VERY familiar. We are only spinning 2 of these cuts an hour, with heavy promotion around around them. With Mix doing a 90s weekend, most of the regular rotation (especially if they're not playing 80s much anymore) much of their regular playlist would be 90s cuts anyway.

My god, how many grammatical errors can I make in one simple post? geez...I guess I better re-read before I post lol I meant to say there wouldn't be mega repetition....and THEIR regular format...

but with those numbers, wouldn't the "repetition" be like any given song getting played maybe 3 or 4 times over the course of the entire weekend? that's really not alot of repetition

That's what I was thinking in MIX's case...the songs they are playing for their "extreme 90s weekend" fits into their regular playlist anyway, so they really aren't doing much of a special weekend....

Is there any feedback on your station from listeners?

Look at STAR 94's Big 90's Weekend in ATL. Each record is spun about 6 or 7 times over the weekend. It's a HUGE success and very few of them are records they normally play.

I wouldn't worry about it. If you like that crap that they passed off as music in the 90s, nobody expects much from you, grammatically or otherwise.

On the other hand, I think that WPLM is doing a good job when they do a flashback weekend - starting off each hour with 9 songs from a given year. I haven't caught them doing a year from the 90s, but they could have when I was away from the radio. Mix did a class reunion weekend once or twice when each full hour was dedicated to one year - that was more like it! I agree that the 90s are a hard decade to "play all the hits" together side by side. Mix 98.5 was high on Michael Bolton and Wilson Phillips (had #1 song of the year 1990) when they changed calls to WBMX, then got stuck in the Lillith Fair female artist hole in the mid 90s.

@bearfur great response! Obviously, a few people on the fringe of the demo/psych who were questioning a few of the hip hop choices, but... Overall, a success. we do three per year: memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day

Few of them are records they normally play = songs by black people

Mix should have gone all 90's. Afterall, that is what launched the station during their first decade. But then again, they did play a real lot of songs that Kiss and Zoo used to play.

Actually Art, the 90s spanned the end of my teens to the end of my 20s...prime demo targets for radio...that's the age alot of people love the music they "grew up on" it's a nice call back to our younger years hearing the music from that time in our lives....sorry that apparently was much longer ago for you
