Mix 92.9 and 941 The Fish

I was just wondering: how long has Mix 92.9 been AC and called Mix and does anyone know the history of Fish and what is the format? Plus, why do they call themselves "Fish"? Interesting moniker to chose.?
______________

What's now Mix 92.9 was WZEZ, a "beautiful music" station until 1990. The elevator music of EZ 93 was dumped in favor of a lite AC format and the moniker Lite FM 92.9. In 1993, the station adopted the moniker "Lite 93 FM," and I think it was 1994 when the call letters changed to WJXA.

BTW, the fish was a symbol used by the early Christians.

Oh, well I know that. I didn't know it was a Christian station.

Also, the original WJXA call letters were part of the time it was J-93.
I always wondered why SCC didn't pull the old 96.3 call letters
WRMX over to Mix instead of using them in Knoxville.

The Fish has only been Christian for a few years. Before they became the Fish, they were owned by Tuned-In Broadcasting, the owners of Radio Lightning 100. The 94.1 frequency was used to simucast Lightning 100 in SE Davidson County and Rutherford and Wilson Counties since the signal at 100.1 was not very strong in those areas. The 93.7 frequency was known as the Phoenix, which was an Americana and Acoustic format. Both of those frequencies were sold about 2 1/2 to three years ago to their current owners and have been a Christian format since.
Edited by NotSoSilentBob on 07/20/05 03:36 PM.

Pretty close: the 94.1 Smyrna signal wasn't always a simulcast of 100.1...
for a while they were "Thunder 94"...get it? Lightning? Thunder?
Thunder had a harder edge than Lightning...seemed to be a good idea. Oops.
Before Tuned-In got 93.7...it was a local Dickson programming (when 102.5
became the "party"...local service was gone).

I think a lot of it has to do with WJXA's sister station in Knoxville uses the call letters WJXB and the moniker B-97.5. Since they are both owned by South Central Communications, are the same format and have shared talent in the past, that is the reason they use the call letters WJXA instead of WRMX. Plus, 96.3 used the WRMX call letters until late 2000/early 2001 when they started using e WMAK.
Edited by jwk1979 on 07/21/05 01:16 PM.

Tom Peace let me hear his aircheck of Thunder 94.1's sign off. Funny stuff. Lots o'cursin!

Re: The Fish is the Christian version of Mix

The Fish's format is the same style of music you hear on Mix but it just has better words.

I'd *love* to obtain that infamous end-of-Thunder 94 aircheck... I've heard about it, but never actually heard it. It is a prime example of why DJs aren't usually allowed on-air when they know a format flip is imminent.

For what it's worth, Thunder 94 was one of my all-time favorite stations. Was it commercially viable? Not really, especially when WKDF started leaning alternative (and stole late voiceover talent Keith Eubanks, etc). But it was a fun ride while it lasted.

Incidentally, if anyone has any old Thunder 94 airchecks, I'd like to talk trade...
______________

When the station first flipped to Cont. Christian under Salem (August 2002), it was "93.7 & 94.1 The One". That lasted until October 2003, when the simulcast finally took the standard Salem "Fish" name as "94 FM The Fish". There are legal IDs with the old name and the current one up on tophour.net on the Nashville page.
______________
