Mix 96

95.5 going CHR should have been a surprise to no one, considering who had bought them, and the fact they had been constructing a stand-up control room. 'Not too many beautiful music stations have stand-up boards.

It was amusing that they came on during the ice storm. Their antenna iced -- pretty badly. The match change in the antenna system sent images all over the band. That was also when 106.7 lost its tower, if memory serves.

Hot 95 was bleeding out over a wide space on the dial. For a while, it was about the only FM station on the air, several TV stations were off the air as well. If I remember correctly, there were several stations broadcasting from a similar location and when the power went out, it took half the stations out with it. Do you remember when the Super Bowl got knocked off the air a WAPT? It knocked off most of the big FM stations as well, and the only place you could get the game was on WJDX AM.

When WLIN dropped the elevator music I laughed because I knew their were going to be some very very angry old folks the next morning when they cranked up the Cadillac and heard that all that bass thumping. There were also stores, resturants and dentist offices all over town that piped in WLIN, so I bet a lot of them were scratching their heads trying to figure out what happened.

I bet the same thing happened when WVIV dropped the adult standards and started playing the head banging stuff.

Nope I was sick as a dog in bed on the first day! Think I made it on day 2...We were brought together about a week before the launch and did our shifts off air before we went on. That way we could sound like we knew what we were doing! Oh and some folks thought WE brought the ice storm to town!!! Said it was our fault!
I remember seeing Bwana ( sp?) for the first time...BIG guy! He was sitting behind a desk and I had to look twice! He was a great am drive talent and it's a sad loss...Lets see we had Brock 10a-3p...smooth guy and his voice drove the girls crazy! I was on 3p-7p...Can't remember who was on 7p-12m at first but Dancin' Dave came to town after we signed on. We would take the van and drive all over town..one to get to know Jackson and it was, at the time a cheep way to be seen. We had fun fighting the battle with 94 TIX.We would find out where TIX was doing a remote and park the van across the street and hand out free stuff ..I'm not saying I did this BUT some would call them and lay the phone next to the radio! Man you could hear how mad they got on the air! AND again I'm not saying I did this BUT we got listeners to call and tell them they sucked!!! Kind of beat them from the inside out! Yea it was dirty but it was fun!

When I was kid we used to call up and harrass the disk jockeys on 62JDX. My buddy used to call them up and request Led Zeppelin or "Go to Hell" by Alice Cooper or some other off the wall crap we knew they wouldn't play. Another time we taped the jock and called the station and played the tape over the phone. The jock picks up the phone and hears his own voice and is like "what the hell?" Then of course we had to ask them if they had Prince Albert in a can, or if their refrigerator was running.
Good times...Good times.

982-0062 I still remember that request number.

Whatever happened to old Nelson Wiley? We used to listen to him on the night shift for years and years. He must have been there for a long time.

Last time I saw him he was selling men's clothes at a store in a mall, but that was decades ago. Could always tell when Nelson came into the building. Would turn the thermostat down really cold.

Nelson was a strange dude... he greeted me each night with a Lysol can in one hand and a dictionary in the other.... he read a page in the dictionary every night and sprayed every inch of the control room.

Anybody still remember the hotline number.....982-1068...

Humidifier? What, she planned on sleeping in there? (Supposed to sleep in the newsbooth, anyways,I heard..)

I never used "enhancements", by the way, which,on second thought, might not have been a bad idea!

I thought the world of Nelson. If he sneezed in the middle of of a forest, and no one was there to hear, he would still say "excuse me"! And the dude could (and did while he was on the air) do one-arm push ups.

I've been going through some old cassettes and found one of Nelson. I haven't listened to all of it yet but do plan on saving it. Also found one of Burt N Kurt. The rest are me with some handoffs to Tim Barber and Dave Kimbro. It was a fun time, to us at least!

I used to spend hours as kid listening to those guys on JDX. You should post some on the internet. I'd enjoy listening to them.

I could do that. It might take a little while to get them together, but I'll post something here to let you know where they are.
Oh, wait...you're the guy that used to call us up and play phone pranks, aren't you?
No, really I'll work on it.
Take Care
