Mix 97.1 becomes The Fan 97.1

This is wonderful news! Not only will 1460's programming be duplicated on FM, but *still more radio folks are on the beach!* </sarcasm>

The bad days just keep on keepin' on...

I see 1460 dropping sports in the near future.

A few thoughts,
As a sports fan, I love it! As a radio person, I hate it! It's funny, I was wondering what happened to their HD2 signal, because I use to listen to the fan that way. Weeeeellllllll, now I know! As far as Fox Sports goes on 1230, That'll be a minimal problem for WBNS, seeing as Fox Sports basically gutted half its staff and will be virtually powerless after 6 or 7PM. All they have are the Reds, and most people who really want to hear the Reds will go to WLW anyway.
May be North American will drop "The Rock" for Hot AC in a reactionary move? They can use most of Ted's music library which I'm sure they still have, so I see it as an option. May be put "The Rock" on 103.9? I don't know.

About 4:30, WNCI playing Kiss by Prince... Co-incidence? mmm don't think so! I know they'll bust out a 90's song on ocasion, but not that far back.

Yep, this could be an excellent chance for NABCO to take one of their FM's to HOT AC. I'd actually be interested in seeing something like that happen. If they are going to, they should do so quickly, as I suspect other stations are looking into their own options concerning this matter.

Hey this is wishful thinking but Saga could blow up the smooth jazz simlucast 103.5/104.3 and go CHR with a HOT AC lean...this would protect sunny but itch numbers away from NCI...

*sigh*

It's really a shame. Back in the 80s, I didn't have a decent radio with enough presets in my car for all the stations that I loved to listen to. Now I have more presets than I have stations that I want to listen to. Yet another station I love bites the dust. I think that leaves me now with about 3 presets that still have value to me, all but 1 of them I can get on the Internet, so....

It looks like I'm officially looking for an in car WIFI Radio to replace my now almost completely worthless AM/FM radio that is currently in the car.

Just what the Columbus Radio dial doesn't need in my opinion is MORE talk radio, especially since it is a duplication of an already existing station. Of course, your opinion may vary.

:(

Almost exactly my thoughts on this. Even for a person who likes some talk, this is not good. First one loses 1230 to sports and now 97.1(giving up a 3.8 share) goes sports so it can duplicate an already-existing signal. So now Columbus has 2 more sports signals and one less hot AC and one less talker. Guess one has to like sports to listen to the radio these days. Even with it's ever-increasing shortcomings, looks like more time with XM when driving, and I will be waiting for streaming audio also, as the dial slowly becomes all sports.

Hmm, I don't think so though. The Smooth format is very cheap to run as it's basically plug and play if I remember correctly.
Another prediction while we're at it... WTVN will be on an FM signal within a year. My guess?... 93.3

I could see Clear Channel putting WTVN on one of their FM properties... Even one of the smaller wattage ones such as 105.7.... "The best buckeye coverage in FM Stereo.." I can see it now...

As a sports fan and someone who drives to work early in the am, it will be nice to actually hear "Mike and Mike" without all the static. As well as most of the over-night and evening programing. I really like the move and see the 'BNS AM station going either "Golden Oldies" (like 920) or all talk.

Just a damned shame. The station, in it's infancy, was wildly popular. Then came the dark cloud of PD Jeffrey Ballentine for three years, and the incessant meddling from above. WBNS-FM should be a huge success, but now it's gone. I'm sorry for Buzz and Mark; they're the only two guys left from my daze at 97.1. R.I.P.

I suggest you read this post:
http://boards.radio-info.com/smf/index.php?topic=118012.msg954595

Jeff Ballentine was the architect of one of the all-time great CHR stations in the region, Z-93 in Dayton, and had the ratings to show for it. OTH, what do the 'BNS folks know about running a successful radio station? They are good TV operators, but poor at radio.

Interesting development, one I wouldn't have quite expected. And as far as libtalk on 1460...don't think third time would be the charm.

1460 AM is dead in the water. Who wants to buy AM now that 97.1 has sports. Great way to cut expenses, but not so sure it's going to be a great revenue generator. My sense is that money will transfer over to FM and they might be a better rate since the signal is better.

Sorry to see so many talented people out the door. One way to keep your job for another year is to deflect the responsbility of performing poorly.

rumor has it that 1460 will become DISPATCH RADIO where the news and the newspaper work together on reporting the news and stories. Plus they will have hourly 10TV news updates and be a part of ONN.

For some time now I was hoping NABCO would move it's Music format from AM 920 WMNI over to TALK FM's frequency and move the yack... uh I mean talk over to AM 920 where they don't need the high fidelity spectrum. I hate the static and fading out that happens once the sun goes down on WMNI.

Of course I'm thinking of listening ears tuned to music, not people that want to hear more Sports or political banter. ;)

Ya know, I thought something like that might happen. But how would they be able to generate revenue from something like that?

Like most people here, I think the radio changes in Columbus are far from over. I don't understand CC at all to be honest though. They had such a "hit" on their hands when 1230 was "The Zone" broadcasting FoxSports that they switched it to WCOL after about 2 years. So switch it back and compete against an FM sports station that has the sports market in Columbus cornered. (Buckeyes, Blue Jackets, ESPN). I realize it'll still do better than WYTS but strange.

So the real question is, what does WBNS do with 1460? It'll be a cold day in h*** when the Wolfes broadcast libtalk. WMNI has standards. Oldies? Dispatch Radio as suggested below?
