Mix 97.3 Shreveport/East Texas

I've been picking up Mix 97.3 pretty strongly in Jacksonville lately. The jingles identify Shreveport as their market, but isn't their tower in East Texas? How does this affect KTYL? Am I just picking up a skip? What tha dilly yo?

p.s. It is a good sounding station.

City of license is Waskom TX, but the tower is in downtown Shreveport, not in Texas. It's the former KVMA-FM 107.9 Magnolia AR. KVMA-FM was moved into the Shreveport market via a change of city of license to Oil City LA and tower move into the middle of Shreveport. It was forced off the air when the new 107.9 signal was causing problems at Barksdale AFB.

Cumulus moved the higher rated KVMA-FM R&B oldies format to hot AC KBED 102.9 "Mix 102.9" Shreveport, temporarily killing off the hot AC format until a solution could be found. The solution was to move the 107.9 facility to 97.3. To do so, the long vacant 97.3 Longview allocation was deleted, the 107.9 Oil City allocation was changed to 97.3 Waskom, KRMD-FM 101.1 Shreveport changed city of license to Oil City (to "keep service" there), etc.

Both KQHN 97.3 and KVMA-FM 102.9 share the same tower in Shreveport today -- just to the southwest of the I-20/I-49 interchange in Shreveport.

I think that there has been some signal enhancement from the east the past few days. Typically, their signal is poor in Longview, comparable to 102.1 and 102.9.

Longview was given the 107.9 allocation.

Okay. I remember something like that being discussed earlier. THanks for the info. So the good 97.3 reception is just temporary till the weather changes.

Does anyone know the future of the 107.9 allocation in Longview?

The 97.3 allocation remained vacant for years, possibly decades. So, IMHO, the 107.9 allocation is likely to suffer the same fate.

97.3 in Longview dates back to the mid-80's as a Docket 80-90 allocation, and it had a number of applicants early on but nothing ever materialized. In 2003 Houston Christian Broadcasters applied for a translator on 97.3, but the FCC hadn't acted on it before Cumulus came up with the plan to move the allocation to Waskom.

No takers for the substitute channel 107.9 at last report, but it would make a nice Longview outlet for Tyler's KDOK, wouldn't it?

I don't think anyone can apply until the FCC decides to open a filing window. There was a CP issued for 97.3 at one time not that long ago. It was a group based in Austin, which I think may have merged into Clear Channel. Nothing happened though. It just sat there, and then the reallocation for Waskom came down. It may have been planned that way. Stranger things have happened in the rush to move stations away from their COL's and into metro areas. A station serving Shreveport is likely to have more value than one serving Longview.

Wow... this is not the first time I am wrong, but I thought the new FM tower south of Stonewall, LA (near Keatchie) was the stick for MIX.

I looked it up and I am wrong (Again, ask my wife, this happens all of the time)

So now my question is, What is the tower outside of Stonewall / Gloster ?

Sandy, it's probably a cell tower. Here's a link that gives a listing of possibilities from the FCC's ASRN database: http://wireless2.fcc.gov/UlsApp/AsrSearch/asrRegistrationSearch.jsp I saw five listings for the Stonewall area, but you can probably figure it out with this tool. By clicking on the registration number you can get a detailed listing, showing the actual location (not just the coordinates), ownership and application info, along with a link to a zoomable map. Enjoy!

Good detective work! My guess on it being a cell tower was wrong, and now we know. You piqued my curiosity on this one; by using a variety of sources you can find things like this description of the tower, courtesy of fccinfo.com: http://www.fccinfo.com/CMDProASRLoo...rch&sASR=1241989&HorizAMSL=0&CallLetters=KMSL
You can see that American Family Association is the tower owner and they list the location as Mansfield.

But check this letter from the company that did the installation of the antenna: www.radio-info.com/smf/index.php?ac...plies=9;sesc=9deb6ac01bc063eab5ee3450149f6fe8
They list the location as Keatchie (or is it spelled "Keachi"?), not Mansfield. From Radio-Locator.com you'll find that it's 0.7 miles from the center of the town, and from "How Far Is It" (at www.indo.com) you find that it lies south-southeast.

Here's the KMSL service area map, clearly showing the directional pattern: www.fcc.gov/fcc-bin/FMTV-service-area?x=FM1115886.html

Finally there's the agreement to transfer the original construction permit from Hymn Time, based in Pennsylvania, to American Family Association. In consideration for the permit and associated assets, AFA agreed to pay $10. (No link for the agreement, since it's a memory-eating file, so you'll have to trust me on that one...!)
