Mix 98-5's "Back To The 80s Friday Night" Preferred Playlist

Will said:
Remember: this guy called Daughtry "head banging music."

I didn't - Radio & Records did!

The following is (c) 2007-2008 Radio & Records and/or Billboard and/or their owner, NOT ME!

It's Not Over - Chris Daughtry

#2 Mainstream Rock for 4 weeks (3/30/07)

#5 Heavy Metal (aka Active Rock) for 2 weeks (3/23/07)

(BTW, WAAF never played Daughtry, focusing instead on the Dropkick Murphys)

#17 Grunge (aka Alterntive Rock) for 2 weeks (3/30/07) - failed on that format, as #15 or higher is R&R's measure of a successful hit

#1 Alternative Pop (what I call Hot AC aka Modern AC) for 9 weeks (2/23/07)

#18 Easy Listening (aka AC) for 2 weeks (4/6/07) - failed on that format too

#1 Pop Hit for 2 weeks (3/23/07)

I hope that helps!

R&R did NOT. The song was an Active Rock hit. I believe Neanderpaul, in a previous post, clearly articulated that in the INDUSTRY, Active Rock and "heavy metal" are not one in the same. So yes, Daughtry may get airplay at Active Rock, but by INDUSTRY definition (NOT yours), the song is not Heavy Metal.

There are different genre's of rock and different formats - and some share crossover. It's the same as Urban and Rhythmic CHR; although they may share some titles, the are different formats and different sounding stations to those who listen.

I was the Program Director of the first 80's hits station. I lived it...breathed it...suffered with it. Eventually, I was able to research it. Here's what I can tell you:

Most of the playlist suggested, for a Friday night "feature" type show, is ok. A lot of the songs on it, though, you would not play if you were programming a fulltime 80's formatted station.

The 80's rock product (minus most of the hair band stuff) is what drives the format. Dance, early hip hop, particularly the stuff from 1988 forward doesn't work in a format, but can fit quite nicely in a "feature" type program.

Why? A lot of the Dance music fits the "feel" of an audience that wants to party on a Friday night...they just don't necessarily want it fulltime.

Oh yeah. The hair bands can work in a rock "feature", too. Just not as regular playlist material.

New Wave? Same thing. Some titles make it fulltime, but not many.

Michael Jackson? Doesn't test period. Bottom of the list. Every song. But, you can play him on Friday night in a "feature" type program.

Kid, you run a station in Minnesota. What you do has absolutely no bearing on a competitive market like Boston.

BTW, thanks for David Ortiz, Randy Moss, and Kevin Garnett.

Really? That contradicts the 27-year old chick at the bar last night that put "Billie Jean" on the jukebox.

That station got most of their sh== in order. It actually sounds like a mainstream CHR most of the time now instead of the cluster f=== they were doing. I can still clear their clock anytime. Got to get off the Boston board before a mod deletes this since its still Podunk (I mean Marshall, sorry), Minnesota we're talking about.

5/23

11:40pm

Heard him play "Freedom '90'" (the single version nonetheless :( ) by George Michael...

IIRC that song came out in mid-to-late 1990 ... hmmmmmmmmmmmmm.......
