Mix 98-5's "Back To The 80s Friday Night"

This is what was heard by yours truly on Mix last night between 10:30 and 11:30 coming home from a baseball game in Worcester:

Don't Stop Believin' - Journey (rock)
Kiss Me Deadly - Lita Ford (rock - in fact, heavy metal)
Magic - The Cars (rock)
Don't Stand So Close To Me - The Police (rock)
Cruel Summer - Bananarama (the first non-rock tune on this rock-heavy station)
Jessie's Girl - Rick Springfield (rock)
Shadows In The Night - Pat Benatar (rock)
Land Of Confusion - Genesis (rock)
Poison Arrow - ABC (questionable - numerous rock stations, i.e. WFNX, play this one - it's also listed as a dance tune, but this one will never EVER be confused for one of the late Vinnie Perruzzi's dance classics)
Pop Muzik - M (rock mix; absolutely no rhythm compared to the disco classic which hit #1 in 1979)
One Night In Bangkok - Murray Head (non-rock)
Wouldn't It Be Nice - Nik Kershaw (rock)
Money For Nothing - Dire Straits (rock)

By my count, that's 10 rock songs (heavy with 'BCN/'AAF airplay) out of 13, with only 2 non-rock songs - I'm not sure whether or not to put ABC on the alt-rock or non-rock ledger.

BTW, I found it funny that Mix's Fast Freddy was advertising a Disco Vinnie memorial boat cruise two weeks from yesterday. Can you imagine all the disappointed Mix listeners expecting to hear a mixture of hard rock and alt-rock (a la "Back To The 80s Friday Night"), only to find that the music is all disco? You may as well plug the Disco Vinnie memorial boat cruise on 'BCN and 'ZLX; same type of music as Mix (rock), therefore the same difference! :(

Steve,

Hi This is DJ Ricky, and I would like to correct you on a couple of points. First I can see and or understand your logic towards the format on the Back to the 80's Friday night show. Yes that show is geared toward alot of the MTV 80's hits, as that has always been the format of that show for the most part.

However, you mentioned that the commercial about the Club Classic cruise and noting how listeners will be disappointing expecting to hear 80s' rock music. That is where I need to correct you.

1. Since this cruise is a long time tradition of my dear friend Vinnie Peruzzi, everyone who goes on the cruise knows what to expect with the music. They come on the boat to hear the club classics, the disco and that is what they will hear. No one has ever come up to me to request a rock oriented song. So again the listeners are smart and they know the history behind the club classic cruise's and what it is associated with. And by far they have never been or will they ever be disappointed with these cruises!!! Vinnie has made these cruises a success for many years, and I will continue to honor my friend and do the same!!

2. The reason why there are spots on Mix is because you should know that many people who work at Mix have a history in the business with Vinnie Peruzzi, many on air jocks and especially the current PD at MIX. So they embrace us to do this and as a result we have longtime Vinnie friends, Like Fast Freddy hosting this cruise.
Yes unfortunately no radio station in boston is a rhythm based format, as that would be the ideal station to advertise this cruise on, but again, the we have a great relationship with Mix, I know the people there and they want to continue Vinnie's tradition as well and that is why we are once again partnering with them.

So a reminder to all: A Great night is schedule for Friday June 15th, as the club classic cruise sets sail again, with me DJ Ricky, Fast Freddy and a Live performance by Stevie B!!!! Get your tickets now, by calling Bay State cruise lines at 617-748-1428, or www.baystatecruises.com. Also more information can be found on my website: www.djrickyboston.com. Hope to see everyone on the Boat!!
