Mix 98.5's Mother's Day/NKOTB/MILF promo

W

Mix 98.5 aired a Mother's Day/New Kids on the Block promo this past weekend, the copy went something like this:

"You loved them as a teenager, and now that you're a MILF, you still love New Kids on the Block...be caller X to win tickets..."

Of course, everyone knows that a MILF is a Mom I'd Like to [EDIT]

So, Mix is calling their listeners MILFs?

That's classy!

If you're a mom who was teen when NKOTB was popular, you have three choices for contemporary, female driven formats. KISS, Mix or Magic. If you are listening to Magic, you'd probably find this offensive. If you are listening to KISS or Mix, chances are you have a sense of humor that understands how tongue-in-cheek the promo was.

Sad, but too funny!
Now when they mention Mariah's, Madonna's or Britney's "camel toe" that's when they'll really show some class.

My goodness, what we can say on the air now-a-days has really changed since I got started in this business. I remember getting called on the carpet for saying "balls" once.
Wonder if they received complaints?

is that like the Carlin routine about words that have 2 different meanings?

Play by Play announcers have been saying "he has 2 balls on him" for years without getting called on the carpet.

I used to giggle like a schoolgirl whenever I turned on sportscenter and heard the following "Barry Bonds had a solo jack last night..." or whenever I heard on the news about some old lady "beating off an intruder"...just saying....

Have you ever used the word "snafu" on the air?

If you have, then you can't gripe about "MILF."

"Snafu" is a military acronym -- "situation normal: all f**ked up" -- that has become part of the lexicon.

Like it or not, so has "MILF."

I have not used the word "snafu" on the air, and I'm not griping about the use of "MILF", I'm just saying that the promo lacked class.

And "MILF" may indeed be part of today's vernacular, but that doesn't make the Mix 98.5 promo any less tacky.

...with one really huge difference: The "F" in SNAFU has a non-scatalogical substitute..."fouled." There's no such substitute for the "F" in MILF.

Sure there is. "F" could stand for "feel" or "fondle."

We all know what the F stands for. Google MILF and tell us what you come up with.

Thank you, Captain Obvious. Are you going to tell us what WRKO's call letters are in your next post?

Apparently it wasn't that obvious to you, according to your earlier reply, quoted above.

But whatever.

WRKO's call letters are WRKO; that should be obvious, shouldn't it?

When did MILF become a compliment to women? It started from a porno. I think its disgusting that a station use it in a promo and I'm open minded but this crosses the line.

I think it's funny that a bunch of MEN are all upset over the use of the term MILF; yet I am willing to bet a large majority of the demo who heard the promo, laughed and were interested in the tickets!!

How many of Mix's demo are going to see the Sex & The City Movie (the use of foul language and description of the various bedroom acts BY the women can be very offensive)? How many watched Rock Of Love on VH1 (talk about exploiting women)? How many watch Soap Opera's (border-line soft core porn)? All of these have more offensive content than a tongue in cheek promo on Mix...and they are all exceptable forms of entertainment in the demo. Have you ever read a copy of Cosmo?? There are articles in the magazine to TEACH you how to be a MILF.

Like it or not, times have changed.

American Pie is a porno? Where do you people come up with this crap?

American Pie? Thats not where the term MILF became popular. Where do you come up with your nonsense?

After Stiffler's mom was referred to as a MILF in American Pie, it became part of pop culture speak.

"MILF Island" was the title of first episode of "30 Rock" post WGA strike. It was about a hit reality show of the same name, featuring a group of older women on an island populated with dozens of 14 year old boys. My kid, the starving screenwriter, worked on the script and tells me the NBC Program Practices (censors) folks had no problem with the term provided they didn't actually mentioned what the initials stood for, which the writers didn't mind since they figured that everyone (at least those who watch 30 Rock) already knew what it meant and that actually using the full term never crossed their minds. If it can be used on national broadcast TV, it's pretty hard to make a case, other than one of good taste or appropriateness, that it can't be used on a local radio program.

The genie appears to be out of the bottle on this one. It's entered the same class as the universally used military acronyms SNAFU and FUBAR which routinely pop up in broadcasts and even polite (or semi-polite) conversation.

Regards,
TSB
