Mix Fm Lebanon... Would this Dance Hybrid work in LA

If you guys have never listened to this station, I think you should give it a try. This station is heavy on Dance during the day, but also plays all the CHR and Hip Hop hits, as well as Rock. They have an 80s at 8 special in the moring, and from midnight to 6 the station leans on Modern Rock kinda like Indie, but still spikes in a few Dance Songs an hour. On weekends the station offers up some mixes of some of the best big name DJs around. This station would work in LA and steal numbers from Kiss, Power, and KROQ, and even Star and Indie if its still around at the same time. Check it out, they stream live. http://www.mixfm.com.lb/

I haven't listen to it that much, but it sounds like a good station. Also 80's at 8 is morning in Lebanon but its 10 at night here in Calif.
I'd like to see David's opinion on this station but I have a feeling he doesn't see it working here.

Anything involving Dance, David will have a negative opinion about. Thats just how he is.....

Hopefully CHRles will chime in on this thread, as he monitors CHRs around the globe - notably dance infused ones like MIX. As one who has had the fortune of spending a good amount of time with radio in foreign markets (Stockholm Tel Aviv, London, Nicosia, Amman, Toronto, etc.) with broad formatted CHRs, I have long felt that the domestic US programmers are too narrow in their thinking.

I would urge Jimmy Steal (VP and Program Director at KMVN) to check the iPOD library of any random friend and you will probably see a pretty impressive and wide variety of music. I know several dozen people (in lots of different circles and ethnicities - ranging in ages from 8 to 14 to 28 to 39 to 44 to 50+) who have varieties of standards, classical, country, dance, alternative rock, classic rock, indie, pop, hip-hop, bluegrass, jazz, etc. on their iPOD.

I would also possibly encourage Clear Channel Los Angeles President Greg Ashlock to think about his KYSR and KHHT properties from a perspective of including dance and more currents - and sample some international stations such as Beirut's Mix: www.mixfm.com.lb, Prague's Evropa 2: www.evropa2.cz, Radio Tel Aviv: www.102fm.co.il, London's Capital 95.8 www.capitalradio.co.uk - these are all stations that include dance, and mix in a variety of hits from different genres into what are essentially CHR oriented stations.

Howard Kurtzman had an interesting post on the Dentist Board for NY... he works extensively with European stations and finds them to be broader than US stations, but clarifies that this is mostly due to the considerably smaller number of station choices. It's like Top 40 in the 58 to 59 period... Happy Organ to Nel Blu di Pinto del Blu to Billy Vaughn to Pat Boone all one one station that is supposedly teen driven... because the average market only had 8 or so stations and two or three formats.

KYSR is alternative and ocmpetes with KROQ. It is nothing near CHR. And KHHT is Hispanic, Black and Other, and current dance is a bad fit for that coalition.

When you only compete with 6 to 10 stations, you don't have to be as niched. Those fomats would die in the US.

Not eveyone listens to one format. People that listen to 93.9, switch to 100.3, etc might enjoy a station with a variety like back in the 50's. It would be something new and different for people who didn't grow up in that era.
From looking through lists of radio stations in Europe, it appears they have most of the same formats that are popular here, and there appears to be a lot of stations. I think it would be interesting to see someone try it. I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't do better than Movin 93.9. With over 80 stations in the LA market, only 10 can be in the top 10.
