Mix 'n Match

More frequently, WHTT can be heard calling themselves "Mix." Does this portend a further change in music or the format overall? The music already seems to have changed considerably. The question is, mix of what?

Now a mix of jocks

Rumors on the board of internal staff changes appears to have happened. WHTT is clearly going after the ladies and have Val Townsend from 2p-4p on the station website. Shes a terrific personality and this is a logical progression from rock chic jock to 'gold AC' or 'mix' format.

I think she'll be great, just as another 'across the hall' addition of Mike Jacobs to the Sat night party mix show.

Also heard something i havent heard since i was a kid; a virtual one to one w/two stations. JYE and HTT played the same 3 songs right after each other; Sheryl Crow, Elton John, Rod Stewart. Right around 6pm a few nights back.

The beauty of calling the station "Mix" is that it's exactly that. A mix of what?
They can tweak whenever the powers that be see fit and never have to recall any bumper stickers. ;D

The only problem may be that there already was a Mix in Buffalo in the early 90's, and perhaps the current problem may be that Citadel doesn't want the listener to think they're "them" or that "theyr'e back"
I could be wrong...

In the mean and fickle (lower case "f") world of radio and the day laborers who make their living in the business, not too many people give a rat's assets about what happened ten years ago with Mix on 102.5 or 92.9.

Outside of the geeks on this board who get amped-up on formats and call letters (keep in mind that I started the thread, so I'm incriminating myself), the average Joe and Jane in Cheektowaga isn't likely to say "hey, didn't 102.5 and 92.9 call themselves 'Mix' a few years back?"

As noted in your second sentence Yezi, the question is "...Mix of what?" Rain and snow? Sun and clouds? Rock 'n Soul?

Think about this: WHTT has a superb set of call letters that are closely associated with "Hits." For the past few years, the station has been calling itself "Greatest Hits." Is a call-letter change forthcoming to support the "Mix" moniker? Why would a station give up the "Hits" association with its call letters if it wasn't going to apply for a new set of calls?

One more thing. Does Buffalo really need another AC station? Or perhaps, is all this a ruse and might WHTT be going adult rock or Triple-A to compliment 97 Rock and The Edge? Think about it. Val Townsend spent three years in a young rock environment. How well is she going to appeal to 30-50 year old women doing AC?

As I sit here in my cubicle listening to Petula Clark on my iPod I wonder with all the music available out there does Buffalo need 3 stations playing the same songs?

Next up on the iPod Frank Sinatra, The Dixie Chicks and Pieces of A Dream, another extra long mix of favorites without commercials! <=sorry couldn't resist!

As to WHTT, there doesn't seem to be an overt reference to "Mix" as much as "Buffalo's Mix" and the call letters and frequency. Could it be this "Mix" theory is nothing more than idle speculation as the station continues to do what it's been doing for the last few years?

So... when does KB return to Oldies and maybe get it RIGHT this time by hiring a certain guy who once was PD of the city's most successful Oldies station? If the shoe fits...

Thanks, I guess the problem is I have never been a typical radio listener. Back in the mid '60's just before WYSL rocked I listened to KB and WNIA a good bit of the time but also dialed around to WGR, WBEN and WWOL. If I had an FM radio at the time I might have gone there too. The 24 HOUR PERSONALITIES on KB kept me coming back there and also that was my main musical interest.

As for the iPod, it's more like 4400 songs and is far from static, much to the delight of the iTunes store. :'(

KB doing oldies again would make me turn on the radio at night. There is just something about 1520. I don't live in the past but it's nice to visit. Not to worry I don't see that happening.

I still think WNED should move to 1520 but the last time I made the suggestion I didn't get much support. It sure would be a better signal for them and a better use of the frequency.

I'll agree that a clear channel 50kw NPR station is a neat idea, but it begs the question: Exactly what is a 50kw clear channel frequency good for nowadays? I would think that the best model for a 50kw station that isn't an all-news station is probably WLW in Cincinnati.

It's amazing how a topic can descend into a KB rehash so quickly...

To get back to the original topic, I'm finding WHTT to be a bit mixed-up at the moment. I found the introduction of newer music that fit WHTT's particular genre to be refreshing. Now, I'm hearing a mix of pop, rock, '80s dance, and heaven knows what else. It's beginning to sound like Jack with jocks. I heard a segment this morning that went from Tom Petty to "Boogie-Oogie-Oogie" to Wings to "Shining Star" to Faith Hill. Wow.

To these ears, they're moving beyond mix toward mess.
