Congratulations to KMXB for being #1 25-54 and KLUC for being #1 12+ for the first time in a decade. I was wrong earlier in this thread when I thought KLUC moving more rhythmic pop and less hardcore hip hop would hurt MIX. Even if they share a few titles, they are very different radio stations with totally different vibes. Overlap/cannibalism isn't an issue.
I still do believe that KLUCs change of direct both benefited themselves and KVEG. HOT now has the luxury of being the exclusive hip hop station in the market.
Not only were KLUC and HOT #1 and #2 12+ with huge 18-34 numbers. What I find most fascinating is these two very young sounding stations are top 5 25-54 beating SEVERAL stations that do target 25-54. Perhaps that's because this was the Summer book and they say the kids control the radio.
Then again do those old school radio bits of wisdom still apply in 2008? I can't even imagine families having discussions about radio station preferences in this era, radio just doesn't seem as important to people. maybe I have become too jaded.
One old theory that is clearly no longer true is the CHR doldrums cycles. It used to be when the economy slowed down CHR would lean too Hot AC, ratings would suffer and formats like country would boom. This was certainly true in the early 80s Urban Cowboy era as well as the early 90s recession when some Top 40s literally changed formats to Hot AC
while country was booming like never before or since. Now here in 2008 we are in a global financial meltdown of historic proportions, yet CHR is young sounding and booming, no doldrums whatsoever. Look at KLUC #1 12+.
How about the country race? #8 isn't that great for KWNR but they now have twice the share as KCYE. I believe COYOTE was #18 25-54, their worst book since going country in 2005. Why are they doing so poorly? Are they even trying to win anymore or are they comfortable in the role of spoiler/secondary country station?
How about the Oasis? They hyped up their lineup changes to the trades, yet they ended up taking a big ratings hit. They should have kept Cat Lee.
