I'd like to hear your comments on the state of mix shows in Atlanta.
There are basically 6 stations that have remix shows in our market: WRAS, Star 94, 95.5 The Beat, Q100, V103 and Hot 107.9. I am sure I am missing some of the other ones but these are the ones they come to mind.
V103 and Hot 107.9, while technically, are strong, they are indifferential to me; plus, I cannot take all the 'hey's' and 'ho's' over every song.
WRAS: I never seem to remember when it is on.
95.5 The Beat used to have the best dance show in the market; then they went the route of v103 and it has never sounded strong.
That leaves Star and Q.
I give Q credit for having a local show that is mixed here. In the past, it has broken some really good songs and artists that I normally wouldn't have heard. However, I give it lashings for being lazy. I was giving it a real listen this past weekend and noticed that they rarely change the mix-up (no pun intended). They have a chance to be a strong show yet opt for using the same songs the way they always have. The #1 song in the country right now (Take a bow - Rihanna) was not in the 1st hour's mix, nor was most of the top ten. Instead, we hear the same staples they use week after week. I know that playing old school samples is hot right now but they seem to overuse them.
Star 94's Saturday Night Live is your standard Saturday Night Hot Mix, precorded in a city far-far away. Very little originality, however, it does play the currents. The segue ways, though, are very 80s/90s... long and not very inspiring. It is great, though, when you do stumble upon a favorite.
It seems like Q100 has the most opportunity to be the stand-out show amongst all of them; yet, they take the path of least resistance with the same songs, in the same sequence with horrible board-oping.
You would think the a Top 10 market like Atlanta would have a better showing of remix shows. If markets like Seattle, Phoenix and Boston can have a better variety, shouldn't we?
