MIX Whatever Weekends

Jerry McKenna helped launch MIKE 93.7, and is now at MIX 98.5, correct?

Just heard The Pointer Sisters "I'm So Excited" straight into Modern Rock, after a tag for the station.

Is Mix doing well enough in the Arbitrons to avoid becoming Infinity's JACK
station?

Mix will most definitely NOT become Jack-FM! This I promise.
Remember, they do Whatever Weekends... that's the Jack (Mike-FM) flank.

And, here's a little secret about the weekends... so many stations are picking it up now, but the Jack-esque whatever weekends began last Spring at WTIC-FM Hartford and has been implemented and most large/major market Infinity HotAC stations, including Mix 98-5. It's not universally called a 'whatever weekend' (some places call it a wayback weekend, etc.,) but that's what is being done at the more successful HotAC stations instead of blowing them up and going full-blown Jack. Smart move, methinks.<P ID="signature">______________

It's getting people like me to listen more. Mix 98.5 usually doesn't get much of an ear from me. So I agree, smart move.

I'm dating myself here, but back in the 60s a lot of Top 40 stations (WRKO included) did "million dollar weekends" where every other song was an oldie. The concept seemed to go away in the early 70s, looks like it's back!

Well it was a corporate edict... much as my old PD wanted to take credit for the whole thing. 96-5 TIC started it and like most big trends, corporate used the model to do whatever on all the HotACs. I don't generally like this one-format-fits-all concept (that damn Liza Gibbons is the worst thing they could have forced down station's throats)... but the whatever/Jack-with-jocks weekend concept is hot and sounds good, if not overdone being on so many stations in overlapping markets.
