Cruising around listening to another "Whatever Weekend" (that is, almost any hit or semi-hit from the past 35 years might end up on the air) on Mix, when the "dj" Kyle came on and mentioned that Eric Clapton was releasing his first cd of new material in five years...that, in fact, you could visit the stations website and listen to all the tracks....then he went into the break.

Well, Kyle, thats nice, all well and good...Now, I'm going to throw somethin' at ya from this old guy here...)I say old, because hes a young guy, having referred last weekend to the legendary New York City rock club CBGBs as "GBCBs")...Back in the day....when a major artist released a new album...thats what we called em...we did something really, really bizarre....

We played at least one cut ON THE AIR!!!!!!!

No foolin! Al Gore hadn't yet invented this here internet, so we had to talk up the record, plop that single or lp on the turntable and play it ON THE AIR!!

just a hint from a mid forties guy whos going to take some more of his meds now.....

So, you're concerned that some kid today didn't actually PLAY a song of his choosing... hate to break it to you. You know when you call in and ask for your very favorite ABBA tune to be played?

They ain't gonna play it.

It's all on one of those new fangled computers now. Picks all the music.

As for him getting the name of Johnny's favorite club wrong, it WAS a legend. Legends slowly fade away. You and I have heard of it but few under the age of 25 or 30 have. He made a mistake. So what?

My guess is you've got it in for the kid. Probably jealous. At least, that's what mom always said when someone was picking on you.

Does seem harsh to mention the guy personally! Surely you should take issue with his PD or MD about the fact that he didn't play a song following the promo? And, 'back in the day' you probably didn't have a website that you wanted to increase traffic too, I'm guessing? Clearly the aim is different with this promo; get people to the website, get them experiencing the ever increasing interactive nature of them (things such as the Stripped performances), get listeners familiar with the music, maybe get some feedback, then get it on air for the masses. I'm not saying either way is right or wrong, but perhaps the aim is different?
______________

Hi...it's called radio. That's the medium they're selling, not a website. Back in the day music was promoted through this medium, not getting feedback from a website and then putting it on the air. It's called testing records.

And I agree that if a jock is going to crack the mic, then he/she should sound credible and know what they're talking about (CBGB's). Do your homework, try show prepping before you record something to Prophet. If you're selling the music shouldn't you at least sound credible? Maybe radio should pay more attention to the product they put on the air and less on their websites. Last time I checked, I can't surf the web for the new Clapton song while I'm driving on the Gandy Bridge. It would be nice to hear it on the radio, though.
______________

Try re reading the post. Now come back.

My post wasnt about "a song of his choosing",..it was about the station publicizing an artist whos had the better part of his catalog played on this station...but like most "classic artists" over 45, don't get their new material aired on commercial radio...at least down here...

By the way, just for fun two weeks ago, I called to request "Go All The Way" by The Raspberries (before your time, 1972). Two breaks later they played it.

Credibility. See the contribution a few posts down.

Leave your mother out of this. And I don't have it "in" for anyone, not even you.

If you ever worked the business..which your posts show you havent, you would understand the importance of accuracy. Its not the end of the world, but a coaching point.
