MIXING WITHOUT A PLAYLIST-CAN THIS COME BACK?

Can mixing without a playlist be a new trend? Can giving the mixer programming control over mixes be that bad?

Besides, why should a benchmark mix sound like the rest of the station? If so, then why call it a benchmark?

The whole concept of mixes was to be different....at least I thought....

sounds like a great idea....why would someone want to actually know the songs they are hearing on their favorite station?

I think you are misunderstanding me...... A PD tells you to mix songs FROM a list... THATS what i mean by "mixing from a playlist"....

I'm talking about a DJ who can do a mix, turn in a CUE SHEET without any flack about the songs...as long as the songs dont have cursing in them its ok to play......comprende??

thats the way every mixer(dj) should play!!!! Thats what seperates great dj's from the rest of the herd.If you wanna be different ,stop copying other dj's and just be original

I understand completely....I think it is you who needs a little dose of reality....

Picking your own tunes went out with the Carter administration...regardless of the format

Actually It was standard up till 1990, as far as mix shows.....As far as regular roation rotation, jocks was able to do 3 songs per hour up till 1987....carter was long gone by then....

Of course, your mileage may vary. Some stations did that, some didn't. Some still let you pick the songs. Some don't. That certainly wasn't the standard...

That said, there's a great reason why they are stuck to a playlist. You don't let your other jocks pick the songs, so why on Earth would you let someone who typically is a part-timer? You've got the songs to choose from, you get to have the fun and put them together.

Radio is, obviously, a lot different in 2007 than it was 20 or more years ago. You can argue all day about stifling creativity, but it has been proven time and time again that the stations that have the most listeners have the tighter playlists.

I can understand regular rotation..... a benchmark show- more specifically-a mix show which showcases a club environment should reflect variety...Not just only the norm, but something to make it stand out....

Why would a person let a mix jock pick songs??? At one time the mixers broke records in the clubs before radio would catch on....
Im not saying have a DJ play promos all night...just a few just give a "wow" factor and develop a loyal listership...
Mixing the same songs in rotation gets to be boring. There has to be a difference.......

How do you know that for sure? Who wants to listen to the same songs every two hours?

Research. Of course, the resulting ratings as well.

You also have to realize that CHR stations play the same songs every two hours because they're not designed for long periods of listening. CHR stations have low AQH scores but high cume. That's because your audience is tuning in for short periods of time and then leaving. In that time, they want to hear their favorite song, which typically are the top 5 songs. So playing Fergie's "Fergalicious", while annoying to the programmers and DJ's who have to play it every hour and a half, serves the audience well.

Gone are the days when people would wait hours to hear their favorite song. With CD's, satellite radios with hundreds of channels, and iPod's giving the audience what they want when they want it you've got to make sure your playing the right songs at all times.

One would think that mixshows would be slightly different from the rest of the station programming. Granted, you want to play the club "hits", but at the same time, you want to keep the playlist varied since it is supposed to be a specialty show.
