Mix's Whatever Weekends

Sounds like they are returning to doing Whatever Weekends, at least temporarially anyway. Now why don't they just do this every weekend? Sounds like they are getting better at it none the less, either that or Mike-FM has changed the landscape.

Perhaps the program director is trying to see if the "return to whatever weekends" will create several more listener activity? Not to mention a little talk on the street?

POSITIVE FEEDBACK & ADVERTSER SUPPORT can often determine whether a specialized radio format (or programming concept) will go beyond a month or two? ::)

If I remember correctly they started doing those weekends just before Mike signed on when there were so many "jack" rumors about every other station in town including Mix. It's at least kind of interesting, Patsy Cline into the Killers, can't say ya saw that one coming.

That was exactly the case. As I remember, there were several interesting moves in early April 2005...

1) Mix launching Whatever Weekends to 'test the waters' for a Jack FM station.

2) On April 11, after a week or two of playing liners promising massive changes, WBOS fires their Bill Abbate/Kristin Lessard morning team in favor of jockless mornings and a slogan that was something like "Music for people who hate radio".

3) On April 14 at 2:00pm, Entercom surprises everyone by flipping WQSX to adult hits as "Mike"

4) Had Entercom retained WQSX, Mix would have flipped to adult hits as "98.5 Jack FM" on April 15 at 5:00pm. Instead, the Whatever Weekends continue.

Yeah, and look at BOS now. Two PDs and three midday people later, they still pull a 2.6. What a shame!

Let's clarify. It's not 'whatever'. It's 'whatever as long as it doesn't upset white suburban middle aged women'.

It's not the same.

Mike-FM is very targeted, and considering that I have really been liking what they play, they are very on-target.

That isn't fair Ciao, that is their audience. I don't fault them for doing a "whatever weekend" and not completely throwing away any idea of who they're trying to target. I mean sure my IPOD has John Mayer, Vivaldi, and WU TANG CLAN on it, but................ :D
