Mj Billboards

And he's picked up a few more stations. He's got almost the whole state covered except for Miami, which he seems to want more than any other market. That and XM Radio. Sounds like this is all appeasement to get him to stay on with the company when the contract negotiations come up.

Oh, but he is on in Miami, as Todd Schnitt on WIOD 610 from 3-6pm. Is MJ on in Orlando, Gainesville or Tallahassee?

I know he's on there as Schnitt (hi, former Miami resident here) and he does very well on IOD, but the fact that he has such a large listener base in Miami seems to be the reason he also wants the morning show on there.

I don't think he's on in any of those markets, unless you count FLZ's bitchin' signal for Orlando. I guess I should've said he has almost the whole peninsula covered.

Man you are right , WFLZ has a monster signal in central florida. Funny, when the 93.3 is off in Jax, FLZ comes in too........

Have a great day............ 8)

Re: Mj IN ORLANDO

Yes, they are prepping MJ to take on the XL 1067 morning show, they had 2 major members quit, and the crew thats left, is really bad........they are being strung along until Todd agrees on a salary and bonus

On one hand, it's a good thing that a talent such as MJ can be heard in so many places. On the other hand, though, it's kinda sad when you have just one Morning show on the CHR's of virtually every city of the nation's fourth most populated state.

Well don't forget we used to have Bubba the Love Sponge across the state, and the Monsters in Jacksonville and down the I-4 corridor. Lex and Terry, ex-Florida show, are still on all over the state. Although they lost their place in Tampa and Miami. Florida seems to be a state full of morning radio networks.

Apparently MJ will be on a new XM Radio channel soon but he's been saying that for weeks, after hinting he's going to be on XM for nearly a year. I keep looking at my unit for channel 159, so far nothing exists.

the monsters - wtks for that matter - seem to be fading. MJ should do well at XL 106.7........once the listeners they have left get over the shock of not hearing much music. Johnny Magic - the only one that's left at XL, must be looking around by now.....

XL had a great morning show...... but whats left, is well......really bad. While XL's show was strong, MJ had no shot at orlando, but right now, PLEASE.......give Orlando better than sad sack radio, we got now

If MJ is so good, why would that be "kinda sad"?

It sounds to me like a win-win. The stations win by having someone on who is better than anyone else. And the listeners win by hearing someone who is better than anyone else.

Is it "kinda sad" only for the "someone else"? If so, "someone else" should go somewhere and become better, no?

Just a thought.

I agree with those that say radio has kind of put itself in its present dilemma, a lack of future talent, by its preference for "syndicated" shows. On the other hand, there's a preponderance of the "if its syndicated it's bad" POV on these boards.

As I have pointed out before, syndication is not necessarily a cost cutting move. Many such shows also require a hefty cash payment, in addition to the four to six minutes of commercial inventory required every hour. Some even require more inventory in other prime dayparts.

For the larger markets, taking four to six minutes of potential local commercial inventory an hour is very costly -especially in the drive times. Remember, the Clear Channel stations can't just add inventory to their clocks. They now have fairly strict commercial load limits. Believe me, Miami and Tampa (and probably JAX and Orlando, too) don't give up a local show in morning (or afternoon) drive without doing the math. The only way it works for them is if there is a quantifiable increase in ratings - in other words, Elvis et al better perform for Y100, Schnitt must continue to win for WIOD and FLA and Steve Harvey needs to kick some butt for The Beat in Tampa and Miami. As far as I know, that's happening.

So if these "syndicated" shows perform better than the local programming they replaced - that is MORE LISTENERS LIKE WHAT THEY HEAR - I would think this is GOOD - for business - and let's not forget this is what commercial radio is.

I do think it's sad in certain situations. Personally I think each talk station should have at least one local show in one of the drive times. What I don't like to see is a host get ousted by the station for a syndicated show for reasons other than bad ratings. A good example would be The Morning Buzz on WPBZ The Buzz in West Palm. It was a 9-year local show that did very well in the ratings. Then one day out of nowhere, Marc Summers announced that they were going to be replaced the following week by The Howard Stern Show. Why? Because parent company Infinity Broadcasting was forcing The Buzz to carry Howard's show. They're still pretty bitter about it, as the timeslot is still being held hostage by CBS. Apparently Dan Mason is going to ease up on those rules. If it were up to The Buzz, they would probably just play music in the morning. Our local talker WGST recently had four local hosts swept out the door for syndicated shows because it would lower costs. They've recently restored the morning slot to a local show, but the ratings have fallen. They're basically trying to squeeze more money out of a share point.

I also don't like seeing radio companies use their big talent to hoist other shows onto affiliates under threat of removing said big talent, mainly Premiere Radio and ABC Radio. ABC has recently used Hannity to force his affiliates to carry Levin. Premiere has used Limbaugh to force show after show onto his affiliates.
