MLB Extra Innings to DirecTV exclusively?

Surprised nobody has mentioned this, but according to the New York Times(and Buster Olney's blog on ESPN.com) MLB is close to announcing a 7 year/$700 million contract to make thier out of market package exclusive to DirecTV(just like NFL Sunday Ticket.) What a shortsighted, bonehead move on the part of MLB...

This is the same thing as the NFL network. NFL and MLB are saying "buy a dish." So if you want the baseball package, dump your cable company (which you probably complain about more than praise) and get Direct TV. You want Howard Stern, you get Sirius. You want Extra Innings, you get DirectTV. Understand?

Re: MLB Extra Innings to DirecTV exclusively...and NASCAR

NASCAR has already made the jump to DirecTV exclusivity, with their new "Hot Pass" package, which is pretty much the same as the old "In Car" lineup that was on digital cable. I noticed that Time Warner here in Houston had demapped the block of channels formerly used by the NASCAR package, then saw the Hot Pass ads during football games.

Since MLBEI and NHL Center Ice are on the same block of channels on cable (and share during April) wonder what effect the possible loss of the baseball package would have on hockey? Not what the NHL needs right now, if systems blitz that block of channels as well.

And if the MLB deal goes through, it wouldn't surprise me if the NBA League Pass went all-Dish all the time, too.

I wonder how they will promote this in Philly? Since MLB has done nothing to force CSN Philly to even share its feed for extra innings itself.

This is too funny. Charter in L.A. just EXPANDED the Sports IN-Demand channels from 10 to 14. So I guess when hockey season is over, we'll get 14 channels of Girls Gone Wild ;D
