MLB on COMPASS

Scanning AM channels found COMPASS media broadcasts of L.A Angels and Tampa Bay Rays games. Funny combo for national broadcasts. Announcers are good. Must be inexpensive or free for affilliates to pick up. More baseball, always better. ::)

From Wikipedia:

"For the 2013 season, Compass acquired rights to select Tampa Bay Rays home games to increase their MLB coverage."

Where'd you hear this? I agree, it's one team and only out of market rights and they're likely subject to blackout if ESPN is airing the Rays. I just wonder where they'd target these broadcasts to. Snowbirds who are home during the summer but winter in the Tampa area maybe?

I believe Compass is doing this as a deal made directly with individual teams. Angels last year, Angels and Rays this year. The games are offered to affiliates nationally on a barter basis. Affiliates do not have to take the entire Angels and Rays lineup, but can submit which games they want to take.

The idea is simply that sports radio affiliates can now air live PBP instead of canned or studio programming. Compass is allowed to broadcast games into both non-MLB markets and other MLB markets -- for example, in Seattle, Angels games can air on KJR opposite Mariners games on 710 ESPN. To that end, Compass actually brought in some big names to work the games (Dibble this year, Steve Phillips in 2012) instead of hometown guys.

I wouldn't think that the Rays or Angels would have a big following in LaPorte, but like I said, that market would have snowbirds who might have formed an attachment to the team of their Winter Home, so there may be some logic to it.
