MLB playoffs on 890, 1400

Boston Radio Watch says all major league baseball playoffs will be on ESPN
890 and 1400--well, if the Red Sox do manage to get in via division title
or wildcard, certainly Joe and Jerry will do those games on WEEI, too.

(a bit of a problem at my workplace where I can't pick up either station,
890 or 1400, where I sort mail, but they should come in in the lunchroom, etc.
And those afternoon games in the first round, 4 pm starts, will be on the
ESPN affiliates (and also, I'm guessing, on 900 in Nashua, and perhaps on
WSKO 790 in Providence, though they may go with local talk.)

The tradition, btw, is for the Dreaded and Despised Yankees to get the 8 pm
starts.

Only WEEI, and the Red Sox radio network can offer the games on all the markets in New England. This is due to contractual obligations between the RED SOX, WEEI, MLB, and ESPN Radio. All games involving the REd sox on postseason on ESPN Radio will be blocked with the exception of the World Series (ESPN gets the call from all the affiliates of the network if they make it to the world Series, while WEEI will do local commentary only in BOSTON)

If you want to listen to the other divisional playoff games, they are your only choice. You should be able to pick WEEI or any of the RED SOX Radio affilliates.

It's their only choice, if the Red Sox make the playoffs, and if they make it to the world Series, the Network will have the call (if you're out of Boston, you will get the ESPN Radio feed, with all the pre-game and post game from WEEI).

Yes, that's how it was last year. So in the first two rounds, stations in
other parts of New England can pick up Red Sox radio, if they're an affiliate,
but the ESPN 'cast is blacked out...OK.

Where I work is a big huge post office with lots of equipment to
cause interference (and I do work nights). WEEI comes in fairly
well, with a good radio, but only in certain parts of the building,
like where I am. If I go to the perimeter of the building or the
lunch room I can get stations from elsewhere, including 890/1400
and of course the various "clear channel" stations like WFAN, WCBS,
WBAL, etc. I bought an FM transmitter relay but it only does so much.

Right. What I was referring to was the non-Red Sox contests--for example,
let's say Yankees-Angels. It would probably be:

4 pm Red Sox (wildcard) vs. White Sox (this is just an example--we still
don't know if Sox will get wildcard, division, or nothing). On WEEI.

8 pm Yankees vs. Angels, on WAMG 890 and WLLH 1400.

In the past the latter game MIGHT have appeared on WEEI (but they also might have gone to talk about the Sox game) but this year it's different.

The first round features some games at 4 pm. WEEI opted not to carry those
in the past (make more money, and more interest in talking Sox, with Big Show)
but I could pick them up (driving on way to work) on the AM 900 in Nashua.
But now these would be on 890.

For example:
4 pm Cardinals vs. Houston (wildcard; again, only an example)--WAMG/WLLH
(in MLB, wild card team plays div. champs with best record in first round
while the other 2 div. champs play each other. But this doesn't apply
when the "div champ with best record" and "wildcard" are from same division,
which is why you wouldn't see Red Sox-Yankees or White Sox-Indians (or
Astros-Cardinals) in the first round. Then it goes to the next best record, etc

Indeed, if the Yankees make it in (it's still not definitive that they will), all their first-round playoff games will be played in TV prime-time.

If the Yankees' first-round series has a "travel day" and the Red Sox qualify and are playing that day, they may very well get the prime-time slot that day.

If the Red Sox make it in, and the Yankees don't, it's quite possible the Red Sox will get all their first-round games in prime-time.

I would think the local management of WAMG-890/WLLH-1400 wishes that ESPN Radio's coverage of postseason baseball would have precluded local radio broadcasts of postseason games in the home markets of participating teams (I believe that used to be the case until the 1980's). Such a policy would have made their simulcast the only place in town to hear the Sox, and might have put their station "on the map".
