MLB Postseason

What made ESPN not want to carry any postseason MLB coverage? I know last year is when it all started that TBS got the deal. But why didn't ESPN want a deal at all? I remember when ESPN had postseason they aired some games on ABC Family for some crazy reason.

I thought it started in 2009.

And TBS does a excently job covering baseball and also the postseason. To bad FOX still has to broadcast MLB. ABC should take the World Series and MLB as it would be programed by ESPN.

Maybe TBS simply offered the better deal?

And ESPN has college football commitments Wednesdays thru Saturdays, plus MNF.

TBS has carried post season games since 2008. They carried the ALCS when Tampa eliminated Boston. :D

It started in 2007, with a one-game NL wild-card playoff (Colorado beat San Diego). This was actually the first year of the deal that no Monday playoff tiebreaker games were needed.

I still remember the now-defunct "TBN - The Baseball Network" on NBC and ABC.

Would be great if MLB could be back on NBC or ABC. But might not happen as NBC has Sunday NFL.

So do I. And not fondly, either. That abomination was one of Kennesaw Molehill Selig's biggest failures.

I don't think NBC or ABC has any interest in MLB anymore. After the Baseball Network, I think Fox was the only MAJOR Network that showed any interest at all in airing Major League Baseball. And I think Fox was the only network that has bid on it since then.

Thats sad that only FOX would bid on it. Is their something with MLB where it costs more then to air NBA or Golf on a broadcast network? Also I doubt CBS would ever want baseball as they lost money for their 3 or 2 years while having it.

Fox was all that was left, after CBS lost boatloads of money and NBC & ABC got fed up after The Baseball Network debacle. Where else were they going to go - UPN or the WB?

Depends on how much they'd be willing to spend, and what MLB would take. If anything, the fact that it's not the mid '90s anymore is about being sparing with the amount of big budget busters they're willing to take on.

MLB on NBC

I predict NBC-Comcast-Versus will go full-throttle to get baseball. Versus needs content and respect. What better than swiping away Sunday Night Baseball from ESPN? Clearly, Fox cares little about the Saturday afternoon games, so maybe those will be forced on NBC as part of a Sunday Night and weeknight cable deal with Versus.

The impending Comcast-NBC deal is going to significantly change TV as we now know it. Comcast can move Versus to primo channel locations on its cable systems and promote it to death. I can even see NBC-Comcast behemoth taking over the MLB Network and Extra Innings.

ESPN already (over)covers NFL and College Football-Basketball 24/7/365. Baseball isn't the afterthought that hockey has become to ABC-ESPN, but aside from a few weeks out of the year, it is clearly not the lead stories on SportsCenter.

ESPN knows the eyeballs will be there for anything football. It will be interesting to see what happens when the NFL lockout-strike-stoppage hits in 10 months.

If the NFL is locked out in 2011, I would look for network execs to be flocking to Bud Selig's door to get a slice of Baseball. If the NFL is not locked out, I suspect the status quo will continue for several more years.

If the NFL went out of business entirely, sure. But by the time comes that no agreement is reached and a lockout begins, the rights for that season and likely the next (and possibly longer) will already be in someone's hand.

I'm lost...what makes you say this? Fox has baseball on every Saturday from the opening weekend to the last, even putting games in prime time this year.

When it comes to sports, there is no more ABC. ESPN calls the shots and puts their overflow programming (NASCAR, College Football, NBA etc) on ABC affilliates.

There is far more money and interest in College Football, and regrettably, the NBA than MLB.ESPN does better with their regular season games and Baseball Tonight shows than sacrificing air time for the post season.

Disney calls the shots and puts what they want where they want.
