MLKJR Assassination/Riot Coverage

Who here has stories about hometown radio coverage of the Martin Luther King assassination (and the subsequent rioting in several cities).

My own hometown, Wilmington, Delaware, was hit particularly hard by rioting. I remember the WAMS newsvan covering the downtown melee being forced to sign off because rioters were pelting the van with rocks...

Your turn...

I grew up so far away from any possible racial violence I think it was just a normal broadcast day on my local stations. I do remember hearing CKLW 20-20 news coverage of the '67 Detroit riots live, and of course, on airchecks.

That was a long time ago, so my memory may be a little fuzzy. Here in the other Wilmington (NC) we had riots as well. Seems like they were on the night after the assasination. I clearly remember listening to WHSL 1490 and the jock on air read the news bulletin then went into a raucous tune "Double Shot of My Baby's Love" Probably an accident. Seems like WHSL stayed on all night the next night while the riots were going on. They usually would sign off at 1AM. Some of the best radio on the night of that event was on WABC's Chuck Leoanrd SHow. The aircheck is on several different sites.
