MNF Doubleheader

ABC made the decision to air a doubleheader on Monday, September 19. At 7:30 PM EST, the Saints-Giants game (played at the Meadowlands) will kick off. The network will then switch to the regularly scheduled Redskins-Cowboys game at 9 PM EST, while the other game will move to ESPN. To me, this just doesn't sound like the right move. I think a sporting event should stay on one channel for its entire duration. At least the ABC affiliates in New Orleans and New York will continue televising the rest of the game for their markets. Also, will there be different commentators for the ABC and ESPN portions of the Saints-Giants game? I would hope not.

Even though the Saints-Giants game will be shown in its entirety in the NY market, most of the country will want the Redskins-Cowboys game. It's an intra-division game and, even though there will be sympathy for New Orleans, the Saints are pretty much irrelevent on the national scene.

The Dallas-Washington rivalry is one of those that is followed nationally even when it doesn't mean that much. The Redskins stink and the Cowboys may or not do well, but it is one of the most important NFL rivalries there is, along with the Raiders-Broncos-Chiefs, Steelers-Browns, and the entire NFC North.

Why couldn't ABC have done this for Septemebr 19th:

(1) Have the Giants/New Orleans game kick-off at 7:05 P.M. EDT. The game would be shown in full to most of the country.

(2) The Washington/Dallas game would kick-off at 10:05 P.M. EDT (9:05 P.M. local in Dallas). Yes, it would start an hour later than most "MNF" games, but given the game is in Dallas, they could start for this one time only at 9:05 CDT.

(3) If the Giants/New Orleans game has not ended by 10:05 P.M. EDT, WFAA-8 Dallas and WJLA-7 Washington would be switched to the start of the Dallas/Washington game. The rest of the network would follow suit once the Giants/New Orleans game ends.

True, fans in Washington and Dallas (as well as much of the Eastern half of the country) would lose a bit of sleep, but this is, in my opinion, the best solution.

Stupid idea in a couple ways. Why split the coverage? One game on ESPN, one on ABC. Unless they want to generate relief contributions and feel using ABC in the early evening will better do that.

Second, how does it benefit the Saints to play a "home" game in New Jersey against the Giants? They gonna have any of their fans? Not that they'd get thousands wherever they went, but the Saints "home" fans wouldn't be wearing garb of the "visiting" team. And this could be the situation most of the season.

Let the Saints and Giants game air on ESPN in it's entirety with the local FOX affiliates air the game like they were originally going to in New York City (and New Orleans?). Keep the ABC game as it was originally scheduled.

I would imagine you'd have the ESPN Sunday crew get to NY in time to do the game for both (they do the other game when ABC does the playoff doubleheader) or maybe one of ESPN's college crews.

Not this time. The R**skins are awful these days and other than Parcells, the Cowboys are no-names. The story of the Saints fighting the odds and having to play an extra road game is much more compelling and if ABC's smart, they'll handle that game and not R**skins-Dallas.

Truth be told, both of these are Week One games between bad-to-mediocre teams. We're not talking about a Pats-Colts game here.

The Saints may have played their last game in the Superdome. I heard an ABC radio report on their 8:00 am ET newscast saying that the 'Dome may have to be demolished. It wasn't clear whether that meant removing the roof or razing the entire structure. Los Angeles Saints, anyone?

Does anybody know if the Redskins/Cowboys game will start on ESPN at 9 PM in New York and New Orleans?<P ID="signature">______________

Saints owner Tom Benson is thick as thieves with the people of San Antonio, Texas. Hes been threatening to move there for years. Unless there is a significant change in the N O area soon, with regard to facilities, look for the Saints to call San Antone home. The decision to have the Giants/Saints game in New York...eh...scuse me, New Jersey, was a knee-jerk decision by the Giants who offered to host the game in the early going of this tragedy. It would make sense to shift that game to San Antone as well.

The only other Louisiana option is Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge, but its doubtful the stadium turf there would be able to hold up with more than a few home games for the Saints in addition to LSU's home tilts.

Too late for that one, but I expect the rest of the Saints' home games to be played in the Alamodome. If Benson can get a deal for a new stadium (the Alamodome isn't up to NFL standards), I won't be surprised if they move there permanently, despite the likely pressure from Fox TV to move them to Los Angeles.

Baton Rouge probably won't be ready in time. I think the Feds are using parts of the LSU campus for their operations, including the football stadium. The LSU-Arizona State game scheduled for there on Saturday was moved to Tempe.

Mike Tirico and Mike Golic will likely call the Saints-Giants game. Another possibility is to have the Tirico-Golic do the Sunday Night game and bring the ESPN crew for the Miay night game. I was told today that ESPN's preference was to leave Patrick-Theisman-McGuire on Sunday and to have Tirico-Golic do the Monday game.

In case you guys didn't already know, Tirico and Golic will be doing the late season ESPN Saturday Night games.

It was made official today, the dome will have to be demolished.

Saints' owner endorses Baton Rouge

Update: Tom Benson endorsed Baton Rouge as the Saints' new home but didn't rule out San Antonio if LSU's Tiger Stadium isn't available.

Re: Saints' owner endorses Baton Rouge

How is the Alamo Dome not up to NFL standards? I don't think the place is that old. (I believe WWE held their "Royal Rumble" pay-per-view there in early 1997.)

Also, if the games do get played in San Antonio, will the blackout rule apply to games locally on FOX 29, CBS 5 and ABC 12?

CNN and Sports Illustrated don't have that as an official fact yet. I don't even see that on the Saints' own website. Seeing as the building has hosted 6 Super Bowls (the last one being XXXVI in 2002), that would truly be sad.

It has to do with luxury suites and training facilities for the team. The price tag is estimated to be around $200 million.

I hope not. IIRC, the NFL lifted the blackout rule for the Bears when they played in Champaign while Soldier Field was being rebuilt. It would go into effect if the Saints moved there permanently, however.

The Alamodome opened in 1993, the Spurs moved in from the old HemisFair Arena that same year. The specific purpose for the Alamodome was for San Antonio to lure a NFL team, and I believe that S.A. was in the running for one of the two expansion teams that eventually went to Charlotte and Jacksonville. Seeing as now the Alamodome isn't up to current NFL standards, a renovation would be in order to lure a team there permanently.

If a new San Antonio team comes about, you would have consider the Austin market as part of the blackout zone as well, seeing as that San Antonio and Austin are 60 miles apart, and the blackout zone is a 75 mile-radius of the home stadium. The same thing applies in Los Angeles for Chargers games, if the Bolts don't sell out in San Diego, not only San Diego gets blacked out, but L.A. does too, because the signals of the L.A. stations are still within a 75 mile reach of Qualcommn Stadium. The same scenario applies for the Sacramento market in regards to 49ers and Raiders games.

As of Thursday, Sept. 8, WGNO ABC 26 in New Orleans is still off the air. Will ABC/ESPN use another signal to broadcast the game.

The only stations still broadcasting in the New Orleans DMA are WWL (from LBP studios in Baton Rouge), WUPL (a simulcast of WWL and a future Duopoly with WWL), WDSU (from WAPT in Jackson), and KFOL (a Class A broadcasting from their facility 50 miles west of New Orleans in Houma which did not receive any damage or water and in a center of a population boom from the evacuation of the city).
