MNTV abondons its backup plan, will go exclusively with telenovelas

It goes without saying that My Network TV is really high on having nightly telenovelas as the cornerstone of their network. How strong is this belief? So strong, apparently, that MNTV wants them to be the only building block of their network, and has now scrapped their backup plan of unscripted programming, developed just in case the telenovela thing doesn't work out. (More info from B&C) Is this move a good idea? I mean, even a telenovela-heavy network like Univision has something else on their schedule (e.g. Sabado Gigante), so it wouldn't hurt MNTV to mix it up as well, and perhaps insert a show like the Fox News-produced "On Scene" (one of the dropped alternates) for one night a week or even for just one night. MNTV's decision to go just one route could become a trip down a wrong-way street. Just a thought.

But on a side note, at least MNTV has the good idea of dropping the umbrella titles from their telenovelas. So come September, Desire and Fashion House will be called just that.

So in other words, when they become a big failure, they have no backup plan. Smart!

I have no idea how MNTV will do with telenovelas. However, I admire the fact they are commited to a game plan. They know who they are and what they want to be. There's no confusion there. That's a good thing.

If it doesn't work and they try other telenovelas that don't work either, I suspect they'll change gears.

What will kill the network is that you have to watch the shows 6 days a week. People really don't have time for that and it doesn't lend it self to recording.

One could make the same argument about Univision and Telemundo too I suppose. For some reason, this format works on those networks. I think it's great that someone is giving it a shot on english language television. I also suspect it won't be neccessary to watch every episode to keep up with the plot line. Besides, they plan to run weekly re-caps of both shows on Saturday nights.

I'm open minded about the chances for success. I don't think you'll see these shows dominate the Nielsens, but if they can average a 2 - 3 rating I'll bet the network and affiliates will be pleased. I think one big question is whether or not these shows have the potential to draw audience away from Univision and Telemundo. Keep in mind, many of their viewers are bi-lingual. If this is a type of programming they like and it's well done, they might switch.

They should run some old soaps like "Prisoner Cell Block H" from Aussie, if their own Telenovelas fail. That show ran in the UK more than 10 years after it left Aussie TV and did OK.

It is my understanding that FOX was going to syndicate these shows anyway and since it releaves the newly independent TV stations of having to think of something (heaven forbid they should THINK about alternate programming) I think FOX will give it a longer chance to sucsede. After all FOX isn't really trying to start a network just fill in time.

I guess anything are better than infomercials.

But this does beg a better question after the transition to digital if TV stations don't air HDTV what kind of junk will they put on their subchannels? If anything.

The nice thing about soap operas (or telenovelas) is that you don't have to watch them everyday to keep up with the story. If you watch 2 or 3 times a week, you can probably keep up with what's going on. Plus, summaries of each show will be posted SOMEWHERE officially or unofficially on the web!

Some suggestions for My Network TV....

I heard that Desperate Housewives will be repeating on MyNet starting in 2008. IF that show is to air on weekends, what time will it be on? And here are some suggestions on MyNet:

-Since MyNet is related to Fox and FX, why not re-broadcast some shows from the two networks like America's Most Wanted or The Shield?

-Sometime on the weekends, replay some 4kids cartoons like Pokemon or Yu-gi-oh?

From what I've read, only 5 of the 6 nights of telenovelas each week will be "new". Monday thru Friday will have premiere episodes, then Saturday night will feature a "catch-up" episode that will summarize what's happened in the last week. This should make it easier for viewers who can't or don't want to watch the same shows 5 nights a week. I myself have even considered watching only the summaries, since it would be enough to follow the plot and see the best scenes.
