[MOBILE, AL RELATED] Why does everybody hate Clear Channel?

For the past several years I have always heard how Clear Channel stations are horrible... Living in Mobile I have to beg to differ. While having the ability to listen to Pensacola stations (TK 101, Q100, etc) and Mobile's 95KSJ and compare them to the other NON Clear Channel stations in the area.. the quality is like night and day!

Everything from the song selection to imaging to morning shows to sound quality to websites, etc... I'm sorry but 97.5 WABB is one of the worst sounding CHR's I have ever listened to and I have lived everywhere (Orlando, Tampa, Miami, Atlanta, Las Vegas, Tallahassee) and it is just an awful station. I am almost embarrassed to listen to their morning show. I feel sorry for them because their show is just cheesy and sucks. It is the same exact show every single day... They play music.. Screwy News and EVERYTHING is either "CRAZY" or "INSANE" to them. I would LOVE to have a Clear Channel CHR is the area with a decent morning show. Hell, I would take a syndicated MJ Morning show out of Tampa.. or SOMETHING.

As far as Jack FM - I understand that the JAC format is supposed to be a lot different than most stations but this station is unbearable to listen to. There is no flow whatsoever.

Now BLX is a good sounding URBAN station.. I give them props but don't care for that music.

As for this new Talk Station (106.5) - Great sound quality.. great imaging.. but besides their morning show... Neal Boortz and Shcnitt.. the station worthless... Clark Howard from Noon - 2 every single day?

I'm sorry for ranting but the media in Mobile really need to step it up. Even the local news is just awful. Mobile is a growing city and I have seen and heard better media from much smaller markets.

It's not necessarily that people here hate CC, (albeit there are those who do) it's that people hate the way they are running things. Their stations are cookie cutter - the programming is basically the same and there is no sense of connection between them and the listeners like there is -or was - with small town locally owned radio. Sure, it's easy to run Blair Garner's After Midnite on all of the country stations, but it is irritating when one lives between several markets and hears the same exact song on 3 or 4 stations. Although they may have top rated stations, the quality is not as good as it was before my time, and, unfortunately, that is an era of radio that is gone. There will never be another 690 WVOK, 610 WSGN, 850 WYDE, etc. The only way in my opinion to make stations more enjoyable and competitive is for the FCC to break these media monopolies. Until that, nothing is going to change.

These monopolies will fall under their own weight, government intervention is not necessary. Clear Channel, Cumulus and Citadel are all on the verge of bankruptcy, and when that occurs, there will be a fire sale of hundreds of stations. Look for former owners andother broadcast veterans to re-enter the broadcast industry and bring the focus back to localism. New smaller groups will form, but we will never see monolithic entities such as those that developed in the nineties again, at least anytime soon.

Nailed it RED! Your post seconded.

Thanks for the kind words. Being 19, I don't remember - and wasn't even alive when (most of) the great stations existed. But, I can remeber that even 10 years back stations were a bit different than they are today. For example, I remember the old 102.1 WDRM back when they were in Decatur. They were once my favorite station. Now, I don't even have them on my presets anymore. Same way with 98 TXT, and 102.5 The Bull. Now, I don't listen to either of them. Also, same way with 106.1 WTAK.

Now, I just pretty much listen to my small community radio station that I operate from my bedroom. I would mention more about it, but the wrong people may get wind of it.

Hey Travis,
Guess I'm not the only one doing this after all! But I stream mine as well so a lot more folks are listening,
it seems. It's grown enough I'm going to move it out of the house to its own building this winter.

Yeah, a CHR in the Mobile area would be nice but there is only three CC stations. I dont think CC would do that because you have a strong country station (wksj), and nice-solid adult mix station (lite mix) and a weak classic rock station (96.1 the rocket)- if they do that, it would be 96.1....but it does not make sense that they would flip 96.1 to CHR....and not a smart move.

but wabb truly is not a good station anymore. someone needs to buy them....why not cumulus? SOMEONE!

WABB is BRUTAL. It is no longer on my presets.

When Arrow 100.7 went away in 2000, I switched to listening to WRKH for a few years, until clear channel started the stupid crap of playing the same song at the same time on all of their stations of the same format (where i can listen to 106.1 WTAK here in north AL, and bring up the stream of WRKH, or change to 105.9 WNRQ Nashville, and hear the same song on all 3, at the same time) which is just stupid, especially in an area like southern TN and north AL where two clear channel stations of the same format, right next to eachother on the dial, overlap, like WTAK and WNRQ.

The only CC owned Classic Rock station I know of for sure that doesn't "simulcast" is WVRK 102.9 "Rock 103" in Columbus GA. I enjoy their station almost as much as Rock 99-5. I like WGLF Gulf 104 in Tallahassee pretty good too.
