Mobile's Kicks 104, Gulf Coast Country

Well, it launched. Who wants to start a pool on how long it'll last and the next format?

For the outsiders, this makes the 6th 100kw FM country station covering Mobile and the 5th for Pensacola... that doesn't include the handful of small FMs and AMs scattered around the area.

What's the good news? They're playing Patsy Cline right now!

Any specific Country... or mix? You stated Patsy Cline, and I'm hearing a new Toby Keith Song.

I think their next format should be 1930's Swiss Polka tunes and Show Tunes... I mean heck, everything else is covered. Who knows, maybe it'll sell!!

Thats the point right... who cares about listeners, as long as it sells.

Speaking of that, if you can get your hands on a rate card, let me know.
 
So far I am not that impressed.

The on-air presentation is kind of sloppy and they still have the music pitched up quite a bit. Also, the mics have a reverb on them - still sounds a lot like the old Hot 104 in that regard. Right now they seem to have a problem with consistency of volume in audio elements - commercials and music are LOUD and IDs and liners are soft. Earlier, when Cadillac Jack was doing a top of the hour intro, he failed to fade out the music bed and combined with Dierks Bentley was quite the train wreck. Also, the songs seem to be stepping on the IDs - just now they started "When the Stars Go Blue" by Tim McGraw and all you heard before the song started was "Kicks 10" and the "4" was cut off by the beginning of the song. Guess they're tweaking, but it is definitely not a polished sound.

Their middayer Madison - boy is she LOUD - she YELLS at the top of her lungs into the mic -- just started, and had the same problem with the top of the hour intro.

Musically, I don't see much difference between KICKS and the other established players like WXBM and KSJ. Perhaps KICKS is a little heavier on the legends at this point but we will have to see.

I was almost looking forward to something DIFFERENT!
 
Madison used to be on moldies 106.5 This was another move by Cumulus to send a message to Balwdwin broadcasting/Barry Wood. Now Charlie will have to find a new cohost. Rumor has it that he was seen at the festival center the other day and he wasn't at the China super buffet either .

Well, duh! Since oldies' studio as at the festival center now, of course Ocean's gonna be lurking around there.

A straight country presentation with a "gold" lean. What a waste of time. The suits at Cumulus have such a big ego that they think just because THEY do it, people will listen. If they had any chance of beating KSJ, they should have gone with the rumors and go the country/ southern rock hybrid that is kicking serious ass for them in Nashville. If they thought the ABB audiance was loyal, wait until they get a dose of reality from the KSJ crew. Just putting the same product on a different stick isn't going to make you a winner. Even with the "gold" lean. There was a classic country station for a little while. Where is it now? Plus, a chance to win a $1000!?!? If you're gonna mimmick an already established station, you gotta up the anty more than that!! 10k minimum if you want any chance of builing a loyal audience.

It's kind of funny listening to some of the segs. Can't even take the time to get things right in the Scotts system before launching. Hey, G.P.!! Instead of taking the time to figure out how your gonna throw people under the bus when this flops, how about learning the ropes of the operation systems in YOUR radio stations and help educate the new staff so the first impression is at least clean sounding. Also, the car dealer called! They have an overstock of moving vans!

Unfortunately, the station to which you are referring in Nashville is not a country / southern rock hybrid. We would love such a station in Nashville!! The Wolf throws in one classic AC song every 2-3 hours and sometimes among those are softer-edged country rock tunes. That's as close as it gets.

There are two to three "off country" plays generally per hour.
CCR, Eagles, Jim Croce, Christopher Cross (Sailing)

Today, ZZ Top (Legs) America (Sister Golden Hair) just to
name a few.

You're right about it not being really Southern rock.

I had not noticed that kind of frequency. I'm sure I've heard hours with no "off country" plays. Has the frequency increased in the past few weeks maybe? Does it change by daypart? I'm mostly checking in on the Wolf during middays.

(Alabama boardians: I apologize in advance for this off-board discussion.)
