Moby in the Morning Audio Quality

The Moby show sounds awful, at least on WNGC. Whenever he plays music, it sounds really bad. The website says something about a 128 kbps bitrate, which, if MP2 stereo or similar, would explain the poor quality. If they can't upgrade the bitrate, they ought to download the music to the stations in advance and play it out locally.

Is it the same on the other Moby affiliates?

Yes....I have Moby on 92.5 and the audio is "lacking." The worst audio is his voice....especially during telephone bits. It's the worst telco hybrid I've ever heard.....his mic processing is terrible too.
We run so much compression at The Bear you must wear seatbelts to keep from being sucked through the mic....it makes bad audio....REALLY bad.

By WNGC and other stations playing the music locally would defeat the purpose of carrying Moby's show. You would run into many problems by doing it that way. Yes, the quality of his stuff is horrible... even the overall quality of his show has become poor. It almost sounds like the songs he plays were recorded off an internet stream.

He almost needs to do his show locally from WNGC or The Bear in Griffin to get a better quality sound... maybe

Just my 2 cents... ;D

I'm sure his producers could rig up a way whereby they could trigger local playback on a AudioVAULT or Prophet system with subaudible tones or whatever. That is, if they are too cheap to upgrade the bandwidth. As Tom said, the voice processing is not very good either.

Moby has no mic processing. He needs a Symetrix 528E or something. As I recall, he has a Telos phone hybrid. If the quality is bad, call Charles Nettleman, his engineer.

I guess I would complain to Charlie, but........my audio quality is not "award winning" either!
Moby has been very successful at The Bear.....when I have mentioned the audio quality issues they say "Huh??"
Sssnake is the first one to complain about the audio to my knowledge. But this guy used to engineer WREK where the audio is/was pristine.....the only place he ever made a squarewave was in an audio lab!(smile)

They have a rig that they use to fire "magic calls", so it could be done, but going back to my original point... why would any radio station hire a syndicated morning show to have to play back music locally? It would be too much work for the pd's at the stations to have to do. (think why they have a syndicated show instead of a local one :) ) Look at other syndicated shows like Lia, Danny Wright and After Midnite with Blair Garner... they play their own music with-in their own show... (of course, they have better equipment and management that wouldn't allow them to send down crap to affiliates)

I happen to know the guy who runs the board at WNGC, and he has said he notices some audio differences, but only during the pre-recorded phone calls and certain songs. Moby has some technical issues at least once a week, but it seems to be improving.

But keep in mind that your radio may have trouble getting WNGC depending on where you are listening from. The closer to Downtown Atlanta you are (or anywhere in Northeast Atlanta), they quality may go down. Remember WNGC's transmitter is located in Lula, and they are bouncing their signal from the studios from Athens to Hall County. And sometimes ROOSTER 106 in Columbus bleeds in... that could be why the audio is bad during Moby?

No, ssnake is right. The entire show's sound quality isn't great, but the music sounds particularly bad. Even if I liked Moby's show I wouldn't listen much because it sounds as bad as it does. It does have that processed, streaming quality...and I doubt it's anything WNGC or the Bear is doing.
