I've had REALLY good luck with J-Squared. TFT at times can be quite clueless. I try to just call or send stuff to Jim and avoid them all together if possible.

Mod Monitor Question

I had one I used and while it was quite good, they're not cheap to repair if sent back to QEI. The factory charges about $1k flat rate repair to rehab any 691, so if you send one it you might as well blow it up before you send it in. I wasn't thrilled with how compact they have some of the boards mounted but other than that it did the job well.
I personally still like the Belars, especially in a studio - while analog meters may be dated in some views I like the visual presence they give to the staff.

As weight is concerned it is much easier than carting around a set of any other mod monitor. Seems as accurate as any other.
I agree on the Inovonics monitor...few quirks such as station selection, as you mentioned, but this is not something that you change often. Small, accurate, and all in one box...price outstanding, and most importantly, dependable. JBI

Jim does not have a web site, mostly because he has never needed it. His small company is too busy as it is. I visited him in April of 2006, as I was going to Portland from the Bay area, wanted to drop off a couple of items to repair, and his shop is right off of the highway. Here is the contact info:

Oh, by the way, I have two of the QEI monitors that I just removed from service. They need calibration pretty badly, but they do work. I talked to Jim about a rebuild/upgrade and he will do everything for $900 each. This includes replacing the troublesome calibration pots and higher temperature caps. Jim says that after the rebuild/upgrade they should be good for ten years. I would be happy to see them go to a good home, as HPR has replaced everything including these monitors, and storage space is getting a bit tight.

The only issue about the QEI is you don't want to align (or confirm) a stereo generator with one. The most I could get out of a recently calibrated QEI was about 50 dB when a Belar FMS-2 measured greater than 60 dB on the same stereo generator.
The peak weighting option on the QEI, VDPO, does work fine so as a general monitor it is not bad. Unlike the TFT or Belar, there is no way to change the weighting from the outside of the QEI. I have the QEI, TFT & Belar and prefer the TFT for off air measurements of peak-weighted total modulation. YMMV.
