Modern Rock Renaissance in NYC

Since the dark days of last fall, when K-Rock was playing songs about “panty-droppers” and WRXP was playing “Rock ‘n’ Roll Fantasy”, there has been a marked improvement in the quality of rock played on these two stations.

WRXP seems to have been successfully treated for the musical schizophrenia from which it was suffering since its inception – gone are the transitions from MGMT to Foreigner. The station still leans heavy on the Bruce, but at least when they do play some Springsteen, they play something deep that I haven’t had pounded into my ears since birth. The morning show is still garbage. Pinnfield is a snob and that southerner sounds whiney and obnoxious, I wish she would just go away. Together, their interviews are dreadfully dry, which is a shame because they talk to some cool bands. Maybe I’m just not geeky enough to get it. Other than that, the rest of the day is solid. Punk lunch is cool and Nik Carter sounds as good as he has since the 90’s. Big things in 2010 for RXP.

K-Rock has improved as well. It backed off from the Nu-Metal it inexplicably added in November. The playlist is familiar, and could benefit from a smattering of new songs, but the last time they did that, Three Days Grace appeared, a fact which makes me hope they make no changes rather than bad changes. Here’s to hoping the commercial breaks get longer in 2010.

Overall, both stations are light years from where they were three months ago. Keep up the good work, and thanks "for keeping the scene alive!”

If you're pulling for RXP to continue building on their improvements, get used to "the Southerner," as you call her. Leslie Fram doubles as the station's music director.

Not to mention the "Alternate Side" on WFUV's HD3 and selected shows on 91.5 WNYE. I know, Alternate Side is HD but I assume that's a factor here since you're mentioning K-Rock.
As for Leslie Fram, she's got quite a history in the format, and was a major part of the success of 99X Atlanta in its prime and the improvements in RXP's music are a compliment to her.

And, dothej, she's the Program Director, not the Music Director. Get your titles straight...this is a radio board after all.

How has K-Rock improved? They are long gone....

Hubcity, that is an impressive playlist! It's nice to see They Might Be Giants in there, they seem to be one of those bands that never really achieved mainstream success but wasn't a critic's darling either. Too bad, they're one of my favorite bands ever, I saw them in Cleveland back in October and they were great. Nice to see The Fall, Julian Cope and The Hoodoo Gurus in there too, all underappreciated artists. Do you think you could go as far back as The Velvet Underground?

Absolutely.

Thanks for the compliment! Hope you tune in a bit! (Grab that iPhone app to do so, at least for now.)
