Hello all. I'd like to get your feedback on the following:

I have resumed my search for the right place to launch a commercial Part 15 AM radio station. I'm looking at several locations in NY and PA. Eventually, I hope the Part 15 AM station will lead to a licensed LPAM or LPFM station. I've been off the air for three years now and I am itching to return to the air from a place that will welcome a new, small community station. My timetable for startup is between one and two years from now.

Could Rome support a Full Service Part 15 AM station? Thanks to the use of multiple transmitters or a single unit in the right location I could effectively cover the entire city limits with a listenable signal. Having been there numerous times (tried to buy a home there 2 years ago but the deal fell through) it seems as though they have only regional radio from Utica. A few friends have recommended Rome as the right place for me to attempt this project.

Your comments are welcome.

I can tell you that people in Rome used to want nothing to do with Utica media.
They wanted NOTHING to do with Utica. They hated the terms Utica-Rome & twin cities. Back in the day the two Rome stations WKAL & WRNY did quite nicely seving western Oneida County. The people in Rome wouldn't even watch Utica TV. Rome is in the Syracuse TV market. Don't know how they feel nowdays. I understand the Rome paper, The Sentinal still does well.

anoldguy. Thanks for the tip.

In previous visits and meetings I did learn what you've stated to be fact. If I locate in Rome I have no intention of moving into Utica. My station would serve only Rome and its residents and business community. The County Exec. and his Community Development Dept. support the idea and will back me with much needed "moral" support. I just need to find out if there still is sufficient interest in returning local radio to the city of Rome and if it would be supported by the area residents and business community. The owner of the Rome Sentinel does not like the idea and perceives my station as a potential threat to his ad revenue. Hilarious when you think about it. My revenue will be miniscule compared to his and any fool should realize that some businesses that advertise on radio NEVER use the newspaper and vice versa. Others use both. If anything it could probably help and not hinder his revenue stream.

Interesting since the Sentinel Company put WRUN -FM & AM on the aired and owned them for close to 30 years. One of the Sentinel Company's big guys brother was WRUN's first G. M. - a fellow named Richard Clark. Dick Clark's father.

Perhaps the guy running the paper now has had a change of heart. I may be wrong but I seem to recall him saying to me that the newspaper had been in the family for years.

anoldguy, do you live in Rome?

No, but both my mother & father were from there so I spent a lot of time there when I was youngguy. I no have relatives there now, but I did just happen to drive thru there last week.

Hey William,
What do you think of three low powered towers? One in Rome, another on Oneida Lake, and another on the State Tower building in Downtown Syracuse. Call it pirate radio. Kids could have fun with it.

Nice idea but from a marketing standpoint it probably would not work. Actually, a LOT of these Part 15 stations are on the air in schools across the country. I've sold FCC Type Accepted units to both Churches and schools in a few different places. They make great training grounds for aspiring broadcasters that othewise would not have a chance to get their foot in the door of a licensed station thanks to the limited number of openings.
