Moment of silence - FCC ?

K

KXRX

Guest
A much talked about moment of silence this morning to remember those who lost their lives last Friday. John Curley did a very short moment this morning saying he couldn't do much more since the FCC will not let him. Huh? Is there an FCC rule or did John just panic not hearing the sound of his own voice for more than a second?

Sounds like he just freaked out following the news clock...

I got an e-mail from the programming department for the station I work for that they missed one spot by taking our anchored national news coverage of the "moment of silence."

KOMO was on moment of silence, but at 6:30 this morning I didn't hear anyone else. Rude and disrespectful. How about 9:30 PT?

The FCC didn't mandate this. They say it's not their business to get involved in programming matters. (However should A, You say B, Play a song with a fleeting expletive. Suddenly, they're REALLY interested in programming decisions...)

It was pretty much a radio industry goodwill gesture.

Right, but that wasn't the point that KXRX was trying to address, I think what John was worried about was the fcc not liking having a moment of dead air. I guess, however, they don't worry about this really, the stations are more worried about it than the FCC.

Which raises the question....
Are there more listeners with ADD who will turn out after 3 seconds of silence
or
More members of the industry who will listen for hours to dead air with morbid curiosity of "what the hell just happened THERE??"

If the Seahawks make it to the Super bowl, I wonder if KJR will run dead air during the game, like they did last time. Any one remember that long run of dead air?

Why did they do that? Sudden change-of-plans blackout or something?

Oh lets see it was February 6, 2006, Seahawks in the supper bowl. KJR ran dead air with Leagal ID's of course for four hours, during the game. They were not happy they could not air the game if I remember right.

That was just asinine. KJR could have just as well flipped to a simulcast of KJR-FM until the game was over (it's obvious NO sports fan is going to listen to KJR if the Super Bowl is playing on KIRO.)
