"Money for Nothing" on Lite Rock 105? No Way!!

I was listening to Lite Rock 105 this afternoon, and I couldn't believe my ears. I heard them playing "Money for Nothing" by Dire Straits! I think this is the first time I have EVER heard that song on a Mainstream AC station. I've heard of Mainstream AC stations playing "Walk of Life", but NEVER "Money for Nothing." I also heard them playing "Addicted to Love", "Summer Nights", and "Do You Love Me" by The Contours. It turns out they're doing this "Backyard Barbecue" weekend where they play songs for your barbecue party. I'm quite surprised a station like Lite Rock 105 would do something like that because I've always thought of them more of a Soft AC station. If a Providence station were to do this, I'd rather see it on Coast 93.3.

Funny thing is I was scanning around today in the car & heard Love Shack on Lite, which I don't think they usually play. I didn't know about the barbeque weekend, but I think it's another indication of Lite & Coast going more head-to-head. Coast is programming some softer stuff they hadn't been playing for a while & Lite is adding harder stuff.

Now I realize the days are gone when a station would add a new song that isn't being promoted for the format, but if those days weren't gone one of the ACs would have to realize that I Loved Her First by Heartland is a potential lighter AC monster. I went to a buddy of mine's wedding recently & it's already being played for the bride-daddy dances & neither party even listens to country.

It's actually very interesting about how Coast has been adding a lot more of the softer stuff, because it really has gone from Hot AC to Mainstream AC. But what I'm surprised about is...do any of you remember back in the late 90s/early 2000s back when Coast carried the American Top 20 countdown show with Casey Kasem? I used to listen to it every Sunday, and then one Sunday morning in March of 2001, I tuned into it, and Casey Kasem was replaced by Rick Dees. I don't remember exactly why they dropped it, but now that the station has become more an AC station, I think they could pick it back up. (Wait, does that show even exist anymore?)
